Selita Ebanks Red Cropped Bob

Selita Ebanks stepped out at the Carol's Daughters big event for their new Monoi Hair Care Collection sporting a cropped red bob. I've waited and waited to post my thoughts about her new 'do because I thought I'd give the new style time to grow on me and alas it hasn't. I know a lot of people think she has a strange look, but I think she's beautiful and should keep her hair off of her face. This face does not need bangs!

Do you see the image of her in the background on the billboard with the loose flowing wavy texture? Well, that is the exact hair style that I love her with. The new look is edgy and daring, but I'm not a fan.

Cassie, on the other hand, shaved the other half of her head and I just love the look. Her entire face looked amazing at the event. She really has the perfect canvas for a look, right? Who would have thought the shaved sides would look great for this long?

I read online somewhere that Cassie said she usually wears her hair in it's natural state (curly) when she's just hanging out but doesn't like for people to see it. I couldn't help but think to myself, Girl Please! We've seen it before, back in the day when you used to model for Delia's.... Ladies, do you remember that?

I think Solange stole the show in her laid back yellow pants suit and big afro. She just kills anything she wears, I love this chick!

AHS asks: What do you guys think about the new 'do?

Most Popular Natural Hair Styles

Design Essentials Salon System recently released the results of its online Natural Hair Survey and the latest announcement revealed the top hair styles fueling this explosively popular trend. Two hundred African American and Hispanic women, ages 18-64, participated in the survey to assess their attitudes and behaviors toward wearing natural hair.

Women showcase a wide range of styles based on their texture, lifestyle, maintenance routine and styling preferences. Design Essentials found that the top styles are wash and go, thermally straightened or extensions/wigs/weaves. Braided styles were found to be slightly less prevalent.

Results from the survey are as follows:
6% - Twists
6% - Straightened
9% - Afro
10% - Dreads/Locks
11% - Braids
19% - Thermally Straightened
14% - Extenstions/Wigs/Weaves
28% - Wash and Go

"The natural hair trend has emerged as more than a passing fad, and professional styling experts, classes, products, blogs, magazines and industry conferences have created a new a niche in the industry," Tracey Gibson, Director of Marketing for McBride Research Laboratory, creator of Design Essentials®, added. "All of this activity focuses on coming together to understand the needs of women who are wearing natural styles or transitioning, distributing the best information and offering the right products and services. The results of our survey are a key part of these efforts and we continue to conduct this vital research."

Hair Myths Busted!

Nexxus Salon Haircare Creative Director and Celebrity Stylist Kevin Mancuso, who has worked with A-list celebs like Natalie Portman, Kristen Bell and Taylor Swift, debunks some popular haircare misconceptions:

MYTH: Frequent trims make hair grow faster
Truth: You are likely to have heard your mother tout the old adage that hair will grow faster with frequent trims. And while cutting hair may make it appear healthier, it has no effect on growth rate. If you are trying to grow your hair out, Kevin says your best bet is to use a reparative treatment like Nexxus ProMend Split End Binding Targeted Leave-in Treatment Crème prior to daily styling. The revolutionary product actually binds damaged ends back together in just one use for beautifully strong, healthy hair that can last longer between trims!

What AHS thinks: Trims do nothing but make your hair shorter, but if you keep your ends healthy you will need to trim less often and the damage will not spread up the hair shaft resulting in more hair needing to be trimmed off.

MYTH: Mayonnaise and eggs make great deep conditioners
Truth: Keep those at-home remedies in the kitchen and away from your hair! Not only are they messy and malodorous, but egg protein and mayonnaise oil molecules are too big to get inside the hair shaft for any reparative benefits. Instead, use a deep conditioning treatment like Nexxus Humectress Hydrating Treatment Deep Conditioner which contains Keratin, avocado and honey extracts to strengthen and moisturize parched hair.

AHS Thinks: I've used mayonnaise and eggs before to condition my hair, but I never really noticed that much of a difference. But I know some women who swear by using these ingredients as protein treatments with great results, so the bottom line: to each his own.

MYTH: Switching shampoos will make hair healthier
Truth: Hair cannot build up a tolerance to your favorite shampoo, causing it to be less effective. If hair is looking a bit lackluster, the real culprit is probably a build-up of conditioner or styling products, not your shampoo. Use a light formula like Nexxus Diamatress Luscious Volumizing Shampoo, says Mancuso, to gently remove dulling build-up, restore vibrancy and add fullness to hair.

AHS Thinks: I completely agree with Kevin on this one, but you can use a natural products to clarify your hair like Apple Cider Vinegar.

MYTH: Brushing hair 100 strokes a day will make it grow faster
Truth: Excessive styling and brushing actually pulls hairs out at the follicle, weakens strands and can lead to breakage. Stick to brushing only in conjunction with daily styling. Mancuso recommends using a 100% natural boar bristle brush which adds shine to hair and gently stimulates the scalp without harsh bristles.

AHS Thinks: I agree with Kevin again on this one, minimal manipulation is your best bet! Especially when you have highly textured hair.

Design Essentials @ World of Natural Hair Show

One of these days, I'm going to have to get down to Atlanta for one of the hair care conventions. Since, I'm NJ based I'm always missing events that aren't in NJ or NYC, like Design Essentials Salon System's (DE) "Design Essentials Presents DE Natural" and "Natural Versatility by Design Essentials" classes during the World of Natural Hair Show Atlanta, April 30 - May 1.

DE Natural Educator Deshonica Green lead three live demonstrations to teach class attendees the proper use of DE Natural and various ways to achieve twist, loc or curl styles using the products in the salon and for home maintenance.

DE Top Educator Natalie Hayes guided her classes through maintenance, styling, and finishing hair into a straight and silked style, using the Ceramic pHusion technique, without the use of chemicals.

The Doobie, Explained

It was brought to my attention that some of my readers have no idea what I'm talking about when I say the term "Doobie". So, I'm going to break it down for you guys. When I say I went and got a doobie, what I'm talking about is a salon service regarding my hair.

Basically if you go to a Dominican Salon and ask for a doobie, your hair will be washed, set on rollers, then wrapped up and pinned to your head. The price for this service varies based on where you go and sometimes on the length or texture of your hair. It can be as low as $8.00 or as high as $25.00+. Sounds good right? But there is a catch. Usually, deep conditioner is extra ranging from $5.00-$10.00 and then if you need to have your roots blow out or if you want the length of your hair blow dried it can be extra depending on where you go, I usually pay $5.00 just to have my roots blown out.

Here is the summary of what I ask for when I get a Doobie... a doobie with a deep condition and the roots blown. So I usually go on $8.00 day, add $5.00 for the deep conditioner, add $5.00 for the roots to be blown out. So the total would be $18.00, or you could wash your own hair, put on your own deep conditioner, and then head to the salon. If you do it that way you only pay $13.00 for the doobie and to have the roots blown out.

More on the Doobie later!

Summer Hair Care Regimen

I'm so excited that summer is right around the corner. My pool opens this weekend and while the water is probably too cold to take a dip, I'll be there! I love the warmth of the sun on my SPF protected skin and once it gets warmer, I love the feel of water. Anyway, the summer can be the most brutal on my hair because I love to swim and usually I take a dip almost daily.

Usually during the summer I rely on co-washing and wearing buns. I step up my deep conditioning by doing an overnight deep conditioning treatment twice a week. But this summer, I plan on deep conditioning overnight three times a week and saturating my hair with oil overnight once to twice a week. Thankfully, since I'm a nurse in L&D I can wear a scrub cap while I work and it's totally acceptable and common. Since my entire head is covered no one will be the wiser as to what's actually going on under there. My Plan: apply a treatment (whether it's an oil treatment or a deep conditioning treatment), cover with a plastic cap, and then cover with my scrub cap!

Hair Diary: 1 Year Length Comparison

Here is a 1 year comparison from May 2010 to May 2011. The biggest difference is thickness and an increase in the health of my hair. Back in 2010, my hair was a little bit longer than APL and very light feeling. Now my hair is just above BSL and it's heavier feeling. When I touch it and gather it into a low pony or bun I can really tell that there is more hair there, which is probably because the nape has grow in significantly.

I'm currently planning my summer regimen and I'll share it once it's ready.

Teak on the Hudson: Lifestyle Leak

Teak on the Hudson is a fabulous restaurant with an amazing deal on Mondays and Thursdays. I recently went there for one of my friend's birthday with a pretty large group of people, we ordered appetizers, drinks, sushi, and entrees and only paid $30.00 a person.

I don't know about you, but whenever I go out with lots of people the tab is usually way higher and I end up paying anywhere from $50.00-$75.00 a person and for a couple it ends up being a lot, but $30.00 a person or $60.00 a couple? That's a fanatic deal, especially since the drinks, food, and atmosphere is amazing.
As far as drinks go I had the Pineapple Upside Down Martini and a glass of Moscato with a splash of Coconut Ciroc and both were delicious! I ordered Miso Marinated Chilean Sea Bass with ginger mashed potatoes (pictured above) and it was super good. The ginger in the mashed potatoes was subtle but different and the fish was fresh and tasty, since I had so much to eat before my main dish came and because when you're with friends you taste a little bit of everything I had about half left over to bring home.

I sent it to the back to be wrapped up and guess what?!? They gave me someone else's food. The next day at lunch I was ready to dig into my leftovers and that's when I saw it... THAT'S NOT MINE!!! I was so upset, I threw it away and had a boring ol' sandwich instead.

Anyway, my friends also got amazing dishes like the Crispy Bacon wrapped Scallops, Lobster Ravoli, Twin Organic French Cut Chicken with Gorgonzola mashed potatoes, and BBQ ribs to name a few items.

Try it for yourself:

Summer Hair Care Tip by Natasha Sunshine

With Summer just around the corner, Natasha Sunshine, Owner of Byu-ti Hair Therapy, A Pureology Salon gives quick and easy haircare tips that will keep hair looking fabulous and leave more time to do the things you want to do, like get to the beach!

1. Use a leave-in conditioner every time you wash and follow with a spray that has UV protection like Pureology EssentialRepair ColourMax to keep sun damage to a minimum and your colour looking fresh all summer long.

2. Don't skimp on your upkeep. Reserve your summer salon visits in advance to keep your hair colour vibrant and your ends free of damage.

3. Air dry as much as possible. For girls with curls or waves, use a cocktail of Pureology EssentialRepair InstantRepair and your favorite styler (I love Pureology ColourStylist Nourishing Nectar sculpting gel!). Then twist your curls away from the face and let dry naturally. Once dry, scrunch for soft but defined waves.

HOT TIP: Slick hair into a clean ponytail or ballerina bun with Pureology EssentialRepair ColourMax before heading to the beach for extra sun protection.

Cantu Oil Sheen Spray

I shared my most recent hair update with you yesterday and I wanted to share what's happened since wednesday. If you're from the New Jersey area you know the weather has been crazy! It's been raining on and off, and when it's not "raining" there is a fine mist just floating around disrupting my doobie. My hair has gotten relatively frizzy and "swollen" looking, but the worst part was that it just didn't look shiny anymore.

I reached into the hair care closet and pulled out Cantu Oil Sheen Spray and started applying it to my hair.

Product Description: Cantu Shea Butter Oil Sheen spray is made with real pure shea butter and essential oils to replace vital oil in your hair leaving it stronger and healthier with a natural shine. Cantu® Shea Butter Oil Sheen spray is great for natural styles as well as adding that finishing touch to chemically altered, pressed or permed hair. Shea butter and jojoba oil help create a non-tacky formula.

Cantu® Shea Butter Oil Sheen Spray helps…

  • moisturize dry brittle hair with deep penetrating oil and emollients
  • soften, detangle and add shine to hair
  • protect hair against heat and sun styling damage
  • provide extra protection from split ends and breakage
AHS: I was surprised by this product. Thankfully, I applied it a few days after I had gotten my hair done otherwise I would have been very upset. Instead of just giving some shine this stuff was like an oil moisturizer. It made my hair shiny, reduced the frizz, and also weighed my hair down some which was good because it had gotten a bit swollen so it eliminated that. With all that being said, if you have fine hair this product might be a bit to heavy for you. Personally, I'm going to reserve this for when my hair has been air dried. I wish I had before and after photos to really bring home the point, but I don't.

Available at drugstores nationwide.

AHS - Hair Update with Pics

So I haven't updated with a length shot in some time, I couldn't even remember so I had to look back. It was November of 2010 and I was not quite BSL, since then I've had a few trims and I've been trying to allow the nape area and back of my hair to totally catch up with the rest of my hair because it's growing in like crazy. Until it really started growing in I didn't realize how much of it was damaged and unhealthy, when I look at my hair when it's down it's thicker looking and it's because there really is more hair there.

The quality of this picture isn't the greatest because it was snapped with a camera phone, but you get the picture. I'm still hovering right above BSL (bra strap length) but with multiple trims, including a few therapeutic self-trimming episodes (I can't help it!) I'm happy with the length. Like I said earlier, I'm really focusing on getting the back to be the same length as the top. In this photo, I'm 7 weeks post relaxer and as of right now I have no plans on relaxing yet.

For this photo, I had my hair roller set on purple rollers. I sat under the overhead dryer for about 1 hr. and then I had my roots and edges blow out some to give it that polished look but I did not have the entire length of my hair blow dried. I actually went to a local Dominican Salon on $8.00 Doobie day and ended up paying $13.00 including the $5.00 to blow the roots only. Not a bad deal huh? I have already deep conditioned with my own deep conditioner overnight, so in the AM I just went in with my plastic cap on and they took it from there. As you can see from the front it looks way shorter and my bang has grow out a bunch too.

Silicon Mix with Pearl Extract

One of the products I purchased with my Round Brush Hair winnings was Avanti Silicon Mix Proteina de Perla. Most of you are probably familiar with this product, but I'm late on trying it. Tisk Tisk to me for waiting so long to try it. My hair loves this stuff with a fiery passion.
(Silicon Mix Proteina de Perla, $5.99 Roundbrushhair.com)

Product Description: Fortifying Hair Treatment Proteina de Perla repairs and nourishes the hair giving the shine, vitality and softness that it needs to look healthy and smooth. Contains Pearl Extract, a natural marine product that rejuvenates and fortifies the hair and luster finish to create healthy hair, repel humidity and avoids frizz.

AHS: I did my deep scalp cleansing routine (I'll share more on this later) and then deep conditioned overnight with the Silicon Mix Conditioner with Pearl extract. The color of the conditioner is a pretty light blue and it's consistency is pretty thick and creamy. I applied the conditioner to the ends of my hair working up to about 1/2 inch from my scalp, then covered my hair with a plastic cap and a scarf. The next day I rinsed the conditioner out and WOW! During my shower I really didn't notice anything too great. My hair was easy enough to comb through with my Denman, but once I got out the shower and ran my hair through my hands that I really noticed how soft and healthy my hair felt. It felt so soft and strong, I LOVE it! This product will be placed right in the front of my beauty closet.

Scalp Stimulating Shampoo

(Alopecil Cinnamon & Rosemary Shampoo, $7.99 Roundbrushhair.com)

Every once and a while I feel like my scalp needs a deep down thorough cleaning. The shampoo I like to use to get the job done is Alopecil Apretol Canela y Romero (that's Cinnamon and Rosemary Shampoo for the non-spanish speaking folks). Now this shampoo is relatively new to me, but I'm a big fan. The color is a bit shocking, I though the bottle was green but that's actually the product inside - the bottle is clear.

Product Description: Fortifying hair treatment of intensive action with Apretol-15, Cinnamon and Rosemary. It deeply cleans the scalp and hair pores. It helps to stimulate hair growth, regenerates damaged hair, and helps to prevent dandruff.

AHS (An Honest Story): Once you get past the crazy green color, the scent intoxicates you. I love the scent while the boyfriend says it stinks. It smells like Cinnamon and Rosemary, very herby but once you thoroughly wet your hair and scalp and apply the shampoo you immediately start to feel the deep tingle. It lathers up very well and really cleanses my scalp and hair. The cooler the water the more intense the tingly feeling, which is fun because you can sort of control it. The only downside is that my hair feels somewhat dry after using the shampoo, which is why I only use it when I feel like my scalp needs a deep down cleansing.

Tip: Use a good deep conditioner on the length of your hair after cleansing with this shampoo.

Tangle Teezer vs Shampoo Scalp Massager

A few months ago it seemed as if everyone and their momma was raving about the Tangle Teezer. But, I never said a word about it. Here is why: I never thought it was that great (without even trying it) and it reminded me of the old school scalp massager things they used back in the day in the hair salon and that always made my hair shed and break. Now it seems like the same people who were raving about it are now realizing that their ends are suffering at the hands of the Tangle Teezer.

Okay, so ladies the moral of the story? Don't bandwagon jump when it comes to hair care.

How to Curl your Lashes Like a Pro

Luckily, my eyelashes curl naturally but I know so many women have lash issues and turn to eyelash curlers for help. Celebrity makeup artist, Kimara Ahnert of the Kimara Ahnert Studio in New York City, breaks down how to curl eyelashes in 5 easy steps:

1. Curl lashes using a lash curler like Tweezerman’s ProCurl Lash Curler. Start at the base of the lash then again midway up the lash.
2. Line lashes with a black liquid liner or creme liner using an angled eyeliner brush.
3. Pull the eye taut and using the angled brush, paint a thin line right into the base of the lashes. For more drama increase the thickness of the line of liner- it should be thickest near the corner of the eye and then gently taper toward the outer corner.
4. Follow with two diff kinds of mascara- one for length and then one for volume. Use at least two coats. Gently and with a light touch sweep on a coat of mascara on bottom lashes
5. Use a lash comb to separate and remove any clumps.

Designed with unique control, this next-generation, professional-quality ProCurl Lash Curler’s sleek body-shape with large opening is crafted to exceed the standards and performance of any other curler on the market today. Reworked angles create excellent, pinch-proof access to each lash like never before — allowing for effortless use and maximum curl. The narrowed top bar is designed to fit most eye shapes and reach every last lash. Stylish and distinctive in rosegold with black pad.

Tweezerman ProCurl® Lash Curler is available at Tweezerman.com for $20

Arganics Edge Smoothing Gel

I've told you guys time and time again that my nape area is my weak spot, when it comes to healthy hair. You name it and I've gone through it with that area, especially roughness. No matter what I do that area refuses to be smooth, I've tried it all so I have to rely on gel and scarves. One of the best gels I've come across recently is Arganic's Edge Smoothing Gel.

Product Description: OutSmooth This! Edge Smoothing Gel This alcohol free, non-flaking smoothing gel helps to give your edges a silky-soft, relaxed look all while adding extra moisturizing and conditioning agents to your hair and scalp. Use this gel to condition, shine and smooth your edges/hairline. Not only does this gel give you a non-greasy, flexible hold, but it works to condition and protect dry, damaged hair. Great for both relaxed and natural hair styles.

I'm a FAN! Have you tried it?
