Essie for J. Crew Swatch on Brown Skin

So whoa! Where have I been?? I had no idea that my favorite nail polish line, Essie teamed up with J.Crew to deliver custom limited edition shades. Why didn't you guys tell me? Anyway, I picked up two shade from J. Crew, Milky Way and Chubby Cheeks. So far I've only tried the Milky Way shade and let me tell you I'm loving it. It's the perfect shade for doll hands or mannequin nails on brown skin, or lighter skin it's more of a camel-y brown.

Got it in a J. Crew store for $8.00

Fall Hair Trend: The Kitten Bump

The legendary Garren of Garren New York Salon was backstage at the Anna Sui show on Feb 16. Garren says about the hair for the Fall 2011 Anna Sui collection, “We wanted to capture a moment in the ‘60s, exploring the question, ‘How did Mod get to Baroque?’ There was this Edwardian crossover, with romantic velvets and feathers. We were also inspired by gorgeous costumes from the Ballet Russe.”

Two ‘60s “sex kittens,” Brigitte Bardot and Julie Christie in the groundbreaking film “Darling,” were the inspiration behind long, swingy looks with extra height at the crown.

« First, since many of the models were arriving straight from other shows with product in their hair, hair was lightly misted with water before their blow-outs to prep hair for styling. In case models had a lot of product build-up in their hair, René Furterer Naturia Dry Shampoo was at every hairstylist’s station to cleanse and refresh hair instantly.

« For full-on volume, René Furterer Volumea Volumizing Conditioning Spray was spritzed on hair and massaged into roots before blow-drying. “The Volumea spray creates the foundation for the style and provides hold,” says Garren.

« For models with wavy hair, René Furterer Acanthe Curl Enhancing Leave-in Fluid was applied instead of Volumea, but it was kept an inch-and-a-half away from roots to maximize lift at the crown. Both products delivered volume with movement. “I wanted the hair to float,” says Garren.

« Each model was styled according to hair texture, length and face shape. Which meant deep side parts for some, classic ‘60s middle parts for others. And because eyebrow-grazing bangs were a quintessential Mod look—think Marianne Faithfull—some girls were given silky spills of faux fringe. Hair was parted in the center, and two skinny sections were secured with tiny anchors. Next, clip-on bangs were clipped into place and artfully trimmed to look perfectly natural.

« To create the “kitten bump,” two sections of hair at the crown were rolled into jumbo rollers. Once rollers were removed, sections were lightly back-combed. The finishing touch: René Furterer Vegetal Finishing Spray for light control.

Shiny Soft Hair thanks to Serums

If your current hair care regimen does not include a serum of some sorts, I suggest you find one you love ASAP! Why? Because serums can do so many things to help our your 'do, from adding shine, moisture, providing heat protection, UV protection, help strength, and much more. Here are some new serums that have caught my eye and are worth checking out.

Sedu has a brand new product out featuring the ever so popular ingredient, Argan Oil. If you haven't heard about the amazing benefits of Argan oil you must be living under a beauty rock. Anyway, Sedu's new product is a serum, the Anti-Frizz Polishing Treatment that helps get your hair smoother and shinier, while protecting it from heat damage. Sedu is one of the leading heat tool brands, so that part only makes sense, why create a product that doesn't protect from heat? Anyway, I received a sample and I must say I really like it. It's lightweight, a little goes a long way, and it's alcohol free so it won't dry out your hair. Get it at Folica.com

Folica Free Shipping on $50 or More

Cantu Shea Butter Super Shine Hair Silk is another great option because it not only provides tons of shine, it is also rich in proteins that help strengthen and prevent breakage. Like most great serums, this one is lightweight and won't weigh down your blow out. Plus, it can be used as treatment just like you would do a hot oil treatment. Not to mention this one smells amazing!

Hair Mistake: No Trimming

While some women can go for what seems like years without trimming their ends, chances are that woman is not you. One of the biggest hair care mistakes you can make is not trimming your ends when they look crazy. It's one thing to put it off for a week or two, but months? No, you are only fooling yourself. Raggedy ends do not look good and what's worse is that the damage just continues up the hair shaft and when you finally do trim, you will be losing much more length.

Carol's Daughter Monoi Hair Care Collection

By now you've seen the "diverse" ad featuring Cassie, Solange, and Selita Ebanks well now Carol's Daughter is launching a reparative collection featuring a shampoo, conditioner, and repairing mask featuring Monoi oil. As a natural born lover of flowers, Lisa Price, Founder of Carol’s Daughter, read about a sacred, ancient ritual using her favorite flower, the Gardenia, in the Polynesian Islands. Fifteen Tiare Gardenia flower buds are specially handpicked by the wise, village-appointed “Momma” who soaks them in the first-press oil of Haaari Coconuts (special coconuts grown on coral soil and harvested at a mature stage) for a minimum of fifteen days. This emollient Monoi, an ancient Tahitian word meaning “scented oil,” has been used for thousands of years to help soften, sooth and repair the hair and skin. Lisa, overwhelmed with the colorful story and beautiful fragrance, investigated the ritual, history and efficacy. Together, with her R&D team, she formulated a three-piece collection, Monoi Repairing Collection for strong, healthy hair.

For ladies seeking longer hair, this Monoi Repairing Collection just might help you gain the length you've been craving because the authentic Monoi trio is clinically proven to reduce breakage by an impressive 96% and extend the life of hair by up to thirteen times. While I'm not a huge fan of the video that's floating around the web with Selita and Cassie complaining about their texture-less hair and envying coarser hair textures, I am looking forward to trying the new collection since overall I've been happy with the Carol's Daughters brand.

But I'd like to be totally honest with you guys, part of me is on the fence because we all know coconut oil is amazing for hair. Coconut oil is one of the only oils that actually penetrates the hair shaft, it's been scientifically proven and we know, accepted it, and most people actually love using plain old coconut oil for their hair. We add it to our shampoos, conditioners, use it as a hot oil treatment, moisturizer, and shine enhancer and guess where we buy it? The supermarket right? You get a big container for under $15.00 so why now am I going to dish out 18-29 dollars for a product infused with scented coconut oil Monoi Oil. Especially when the ingredient list looks so-so.

Carol's Daughter Monoi Repairing Shampoo Ingredients: Water, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, PEG-150 Distearate, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Decyl Glucoside, Sodium Lauroyl Oat Amino Acids, Coconut Oil Glycereth-8 Esters, Shea Butter Glycereth-8 Esters, Polyglyceryl-3 Laurate, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Gardenia Tahitensis Flower Extract, Orbignya Oleifera Seed Oil, Phyllostachis Bambusoides Juice, Moringa Pterygosperma Seed Extract, Helianthus Annuus(Sunflower) Seed Extract, Hydrolyzed Hibiscus Esculentus Extract, Cassia Angustifolia Seed Polysaccharide, Hydrolyzed Silk, Panthenol (Pro-vitamin B5), Glycerin, Glycol Distearate, Cinnamidopropyltrimonium Chloride, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Quaternium-91, PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate, Disodium EDTA, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid, Chlorphenesin, Phenoxyethanol, Methylisothiazolinone, Fragrance.

A Ponytail fit for a Princess @ Amsale 2011 Wedding Show

“This season of Amsale reflects another evolution and a new approach, with a natural, youthful ponytail with soft with volume at the crown for added glamour,” Redken Session Stylist Giovanni Giuntoli said.

Obtain this look by first sectioning off the hair at the crown, misting with forceful 23 super strength finishing spray and then back brushing for height. “Play with the shape and height at the crown to keep it tailored to your face shape,” Giuntoli explained. Next gather the hair into a pony and wrap a one-inch section around the elastic. Leave a natural wave in the pony tail and mist with shine flash 02 glistening mist for a glossy polish.

High Class Updo @ 2011 Kenneth Pool Wedding Show

"This up-do reflects the high-end Kenneth Pool look, with a luxury finish to the hair. This line is more avant-garde, more high-fashion, and so we created a striking, contemporary up-do that pushes the envelope,” Redken Session Stylist Giovanni Giuntoli said.

To create this look, prep the hair by blow-drying with aerate 08 bodifying cream-mousse, applying at the roots and through the ends for all-over body and texture. Then fold all of the hair except for the front section two inches from the crown into a pleat. Curl small sections of the front two inches with a one-inch barrel and pin each up in place atop the head. “The curls add a softer silhouette for height and a light, airy texture that you can almost see through.” Giuntoli said. For added shine and hold, finish the look with pure force 16 non-aerosol fixing spray.

Long & Beautiful Curls @ 2011 Christos Wedding Show

“This season the traditionally preppy Christos look evolved for the next generation, and the hair embraces this edgier attitude,” Redken Session Stylist Giovanni Giuntoli said. “The look is down, when it is typically up, resulting in a youthful, casual after-wedding look that’s flattering and flirty.”

To achieve the look, prep hair to add texture and extra hold with Redken wool shake 08 gel-slush texturizer and then layer on spray starch 15 versatile ironing spray. Part the hair wherever it best reflects the face shape, whether it be left, right or center. Set the curls with a 1-inch curling iron and pin in place until dry. Let the curls out and pull until you have soft waves, finishing the style with fashion work 12 versatile working spray to achieve a silky matte finish. “These waves are not tight, they’re fresh. We’re trying to get away from the corkscrew,” Giuntoli explained.

Benefit B.Right Skincare - A Beauty Break

So I'm sure you've seen the images of the new Benefit B.Right Skincare line or even the products, but today I went to check them out in person. The package looks darling, but I had to see if it was just as darling in person. As I suspected, it's totally cute counter-top space worthy packaging. My boyfriend said if the cork was real it would be even cooler, but alas I was smitten with the collection based on looks alone. Since, I'm not totally sold on the products ability to keep my somewhat temperamental skin under control I was opting for the makeup remover only, but guess what?!? There was a sign that said coming soon where the makeup remover was supposed to be. Coming soon?!? The entire line was there except that item, of course that's my luck so I left with nothing. But ladies, dish... have you tried any of the Benefit B.Right Skin Care Collection yet?

The entire collection includes:

Heat Protectant for Blow Drying

Toque Magico Emergencia Intensive Leave-In Conditioner for Blow is amazing and cheap at just $6.99 at RoundBrushHair! I've only used it once so far, but I just have to share the deets with you guys. Okay, so I've decided that I've had enough for the Dominican Salon for now, every now and then I need a break so I'm doing my hair myself again. Here is what I like to do: wash, condition, deep condition, blow dry, put in bun. Easy right? Here's the thing, I needed a new heat protectant and I wanted one specifically for blowdrying and not for flat ironing, so I selected this one as one of the products I won from RoundBrushHair contest.

Product Description: This spray will help protect your hair from the blow-dryer heat. Emergencia will also tame your frizz and moisturize your dry, chemically processed hair.

How to use: Spray along hair shaft at a distance of 4 inches and comb through to ends. It will also help detangle. Do not rinse out. You will have an exceptional shine and healthier looking hair.

Ingredients: Deionized water, cyclmeticone, propylene glycol, dimethiconol, glycerine, phenythrimeticone, metylparaben, fragrance, propylparaben, cetrimonium chloride, palmitol myristyl serinate, PEG-8, PEG-8 copolymer, FD&C Blue #1, FD&C Yellow #5, FD&C Red #4.

AHS Thoughts: I LOVED it. It is great to find a product that also conditions and moisturizes, while protecting my hair from the heat of the blowdryer. I only blow dry on low, so I don't really need a heavy duty heat protectant but you can't be too careful, right? It hardly has a scent, so it doesn't compete with the scent from my conditioner. After blow drying my hair felt even more soft than it usually does and blow drying was a cinch!

Wedding Day Brow Tips - A Beauty Break

Nationally-acclaimed beauty expert, Ramy Gafni, known as the celebrity “Brow King," (with celeb clients such as Rhianna, Taylor Swift & Ivanka Trump to name a few), and a world-leading makeup artist with his own line of RAMY cosmetics, is ready to share his “911 Wedding tips” for the perfect brow on their special day. With wedding season around the corner, brides-to-be will be tweezing, plucking and threading their way to the perfect brows; however, before the Bride (and Groom!) thinks of walking down the aisle, Ramy suggests that you:

1. Plan Ahead: If you know you're brows are far from perfect, go see a professional brow groomer—ideally six months before your wedding day. This allows enough time to grow the brows in with an expert's objective guidance, and also gives you time to grow them back if you're not happy with the results

2. Keep it classic: Did you know that eyebrows are considered a feature on your face—as important as your nose and lips? You’ll want to look back at your wedding pictures and admire the classically shaped eyebrows, not apologize for showing off the latest trend (super thin, rounded, etc)

3. “Grow” Before “go!”: If you’re ready to elope, (and didn’t have six months to plan ahead), you can still see a brow expert right up until the day before your wedding! If you go to someone who is highly recommended, you'll more likely be glad you did it. But if you’re going to wait until the last minute, to try to grow the brows in as much as possible before getting them shaped

4. Fill ‘em up: Unless your brows are naturally bold, glam-up you look by filling-in your brows on your wedding day. Choose a brow filler that is one or two shades lighter than your brow hair color. If in doubt, choose a universally flattering color such as Ramy’s own Perfect Brow Wand $28 (in taupe). Filling-in your brows on the big day will make your eyes look bigger and will give you a much more finished and polished look

5. Groom the Groom! Hate the unibrow? Many men need to have their brows groomed before their wedding day. You want the groom to look, well...groomed, but not obviously done— Ramy‘s technique is called Guybrows to keep it subtle and natural looking, and the groom will look great!

Spring Hair Trend: Stylish Ponytails

Owner of Cutler/Redken salons, Rodney Cutler, and his talented team of stylists took to the catwalk to showcase stunning hair. For spring, many of the looks were inspired by airy texture, which complemented a lot of the designers’ style and feel for the clothes. Overall, there was a juxtaposition of beautifully polished and feminine clothes with slightly undone hairstyles. My favorites were the ponytails so I'm going to share how you can rock the look yourself!

Fall Hair Trend: Boho-Chic Short Cut

Garren of Garren New York Salon said that when it comes to daring to go short, “You gotta live it and love it!” Here’s how Garren gave a boyish cut a fashion-forward edge.

« To style a sleek, side-parted cut, hair was separated in small sections with a comb and flat-ironed to give it a light-reflective sleekness.

« “For a smooth finish that adds movement and texture, I like René Furterer Styling Wax,” says Garren. “Unlike many pomades that leave the hair looking dead, the Styling Wax isn’t greasy.” Garren took a dab, rubbed it between the palms of his hands and lightly stroked the surface of the hair, turning a simple short cut into a provocatively androgynous look, ready for the runway.

Kushyfoot: Lifestyle Leak

I love shoes! But sometimes those shoes don't love me back, my solution? Kushyfoot products! One of my favorites for flats is the Lace Foot Cover. The area right below your toes is padded! The padding is not as thick as I would love, but nevertheless it makes a huge difference giving my feet some support and softness in otherwise hard flats.

My favorite Kushyfoot product for heels? The Flats to Go, which are only about $9! I keep them right in my purse or clutch and when the night is over I kick my heels off and put on my flats. They are seriously a life saver! I never go out in heels without them.

Find these and other great Kushyfoot products here!

Boe Crece Pelo Hair Care Collection Review

If you've been following The Anti Hair Slave since the early days, you know that I love Dominican Hair Care products. So naturally, when Round Brush Hair was hosting a March Madness contest where the winner would win a $100.00 gift certificate to the site I was in! I won that contest and purchased a huge Dominican Hair Care product haul. One of the sets I ended up ordering was Crece Pelo Shampoo and Crece Pelo Conditioner because I had previously purchased the Crece Pelo Natural Phyto-therapeutic leave-in at my local BSS (beauty supply store). I purchased the leave-in because it has ceramide in it and ended up really loving it.

Product Descriptions (via RoundBrushHair.com since the BoeCosmetics.com site is in spanish)

Shampoo and Conditioner: This is the first phito (phyto? maybe) therapeutic shampoo that consists of the use of natural plants, for the capillary growth. Its innovative formula contributes 100% active natural extracts necessary for the good state of the hair. This treatment adds the nutrients necessary to return health, beauty, vitality, softness and flexibility to the hair, helping it to grow.

Leave-in: Specifically formulated to condition and protect your hair. The components help to hydrate, condition, protect. Also helps with shine and volume.

AHS thoughts: First, I'll address the shampoo. It smells really fresh and clean, which made my hair and scalp smell really fresh and clean. It thoroughly cleanse both my hair and scalp actually a little too well. My hair felt dry and was really tangled after use. The shampoo does contain SLS, but it's a clear shampoo. I've found that most clear shampoo's really dry out my hair. Thank goodness for the conditioning treatment because it provided instant slip and made my hair soft and easy to detangle after shampooing. The conditioning treatment also has the fresh and clean scent so that was nice. Now on to the star of the bunch, the Leave-In. Like I said before I love this leave-in treatment. It makes my hair feel soft and moisturized, plus it has the very beneficial ceramide as an ingredient. My hair literally drinks this stuff up and loves it! It's a cream leave-in so I don't notice much shine from it but the softness and moisture level is enough for me.

Hair Mistake: Cutting your own Bangs

Think about it like this, bangs lay right in your face so if you miss up they are front and center. Why would you try and do that yourself? I've tried so many times to cut on own bangs and it's been a disaster every time. The only time it's worked is when I just trim up bangs that have been cut by a pro.

Already made the mistake? Check out how to grow out bangs gracefully.
