Kate Spade Fall 2011 Collection Hair

It was Swinging London supermodel Jean Shrimpton who inspired the fashion, hair and make-up at the intimate presentation of the Kate Spade New York Fall 2011 Collection. Think Jean Shrimpton meets Grace Kelly for Breakfast at Tiffany’s. “We took direction from the iconic photographs taken by David Bailey of his most famous muse, Jean Shrimpton, so the overall look definitely has a mod ‘60s vibe,” said the show’s fashion stylist Brad Goreski.

From a little black dress with a romantically ruffled neckline to swingy silhouettes in an explosion of bright lipstick colors, to ladylike cardigans and nipped-in, beautifully cut trench coats, Creative Director Deborah Lloyd’s collection captured what Kate Spade New York is renowned for: “retro debutante chic.”

The nod to Carnaby Street started at the top, with hair playfully coiffed into Shrimpton-style loose waves and side ponytails by celebrity stylist Matthew Monzon of Exclusive Artists Management. To create his fresh, modern take on mod style, Matthew and his team relied exclusively on styling products by René Furterer. “The interpretation is sexy, but a little looser than Shrimpton’s style. And because the make-up by make-up artist Romy is such a LOOK—black liquid liner and bright coral lips—we kept the hair easy and free.” Here’s how Matthew pushed the cool chic of the ‘60s into the easy elegance of the moment.

Rock the Look:

« First, I lightly misted hair with water, and then sprayed it René Furterer Fioravanti Shine Enhancing No Rinse Detangling Spray, working it through to prep hair for styling.

« Next, I smoothed the ends with a little René Furterer Myrrhea No Rinse Silkening Fluid. I pumped out a generous amount of René Furterer Vegetal Mousse—the size of a snowball—and emulsified it in my hands.

« Then I worked the mousse through hair as I rough-dried it, using my hands and my T-3 blow-dryer. This creates volume with staying power. Mousse got a bad rap in the ‘80s because it left hair crunchy. But the Vegetal Mousse is one of my favorite products because it has shine enhancers and leaves hair silky.

« Once hair was dry, I used my medium-barrel Hot Tools curling iron to make loose waves. I left hair smoother at the crown, taking sections starting from the ear downward. I left the last inch and a half of each section uncurled so that the finished wave wouldn’t be too springy.

« After all sections were curled, I gathered hair into a low side ponytail and secured it with an elastic band. I kept the crown close to the head, but not too flat. The idea was to make hair look as if the girls had raked their fingers through their hair.

« Then I wrapped a small section of hair around the elastic and slipped in a small, one-inch bobby pin to hold the section in place.

FINISH:

« A dab of René Furterer Karité Intense Nourishing Conditioning Cream lightly worked into the ends added definition and shine. Last, I gave hair a misting of René Furterer Vegetal Finishing Spray, lightly ruffling hair with my fingers to keep it light and airy.

« For the hair looks that were left long and loose—no ponytail—I simply worked my fingers through each model’s hair as I sprayed it with Vegetal Finishing Spray—again, to achieve a beautiful, weightless look.

EXCLUSIVE: Relaxer Tips from Will Williams

Will Williams is a master level hair stylist and barber as well as the Director of Education at M&M Products Company, the parent company of Sofn'free GroHealthy. Here he shares his tips on prevent relaxer irritation, including one interesting question I've never had asked by any stylist. Williams also explains how you can prevent irritation even if you've been scratching your scalp pre-relaxer.
William asks, "have you had any anesthesia (local or general) since your last visit or in the last 3 weeks?" and "have you used any permanent hair color since I last saw you?"

I never even thought that anesthesia would have an effect on the hair, and this is important for all you ladies out there who wait until after delivering your baby (with an epidural or via c/s) to get a relaxer. Williams explains that anesthesia and permanent hair color can, "mean that your hair is structurally compromised and the relaxer should be delayed until the medications is removed by shampooing. In the case of permanent color we need to wait until new growth appears that hasn't been colored or relaxed before applying relaxer."

Williams also digs deeper, wanting to know from a client if she has been scratching unintentionally (removing dandruff flakes, targeting an itch with a comb, pen, pencil or other pointed item). Even including, wanting to know if she brushes the hairline trying to hold it down so the new growth of the hairline doesn't appear to be out of texture with the more relaxed look of the interior. These are ways to irritate the scalp without even realizing that you've been doing so. If you have been irritating your scalp without knowing it, Williams takes special care to base the entire scalp.

Williams continues the questioning, "If she tells me she doesn't scratch or brush or didn't shampoo vigorously in the last three days, I ask if she inadvertently scratches her scalp in her sleep. That's my "trick question" to make sure I better understand the condition of her scalp."

Then offers up some assistance for the problem: "For women I know who have a chronic itch/scratch cycle, I recommend a pre-shampoo treatment the week prior to relaxer. This helps to guard against the de-fatting of the scalp during the relaxer service. Naturally, I recommend the oil that you like in our lineup, Sofn'free GroHealthy Three-Layer Growth Oil. Just saturate the scalp, massage gently, let it set for at least five minutes (more if you like to penetrate the scalp and reach sub-dermal areas) to keep the scalp calm during the week before relaxer. Also, our Three-Layer Growth Oil or Strengthening Creme can be used on the scalp prior to salon visit the day before or even the day of the relaxer to help guard against possible scalp dryness and de- fatting."

The big message: Always cover the scalp with base protection, because the same process that is reducing curls in the hair is also reducing corresponding elements in the skin.

January Jones @ Unknown Premiere

Over the weekend I visited my local Cinema Suites and reclined in lazy boy recliners, snacked on mozzarella sticks and enjoyed a drink all while watching the movie Unknown, which I thoroughly enjoyed by the way.
At the premiere of Unknown January Jones broke out of her typical 'old hollywood' style and rocked a Alexander McQueen dress with an bold red lip and asymmetrical hairstyle. Jenny Cho, Suave Professionals Celebrity Stylist, created the hairstyle.

“We’ve all seen January Jones look stunning with beautiful retro hair styles so for this event, my vision was to do something as interesting and edgy as her Alexander McQueen dress. To compliment the strong military vibe, I wanted her to have a modern toughness to her hair but still have a sexy edge” says Jenny Cho, Suave Professionals Celebrity Stylist.

1. With a tail comb, section off the top of hair. Using the arch of the eyebrow as a guide, make a “V” shape to the other side for a deep side part. Leave this section for later.

2. Layer Suave Professionals Sleek Anti-Frizz Cream and Volumizing Root Boost Spray on hair for texture and grip. Use a flat brush like the Mason Pearson and blow dry hair, directing it back and down for a chignon. Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo is essential for this particular step!

3. To put hair up in a chignon, make another “V” section in the back center of the head, keeping the sides clipped away. Tease hair in a horizontal section starting from the top of the “V”. Concentrate on the roots and mist Suave Professionals Touchable Finish Lightweight Hold Hairspray to keep teased sections in place. Brush this teased section down and make it flat to the head. Twist section and pin away.

4. Tease the sides, taking vertical sections and following the step above. Gently brush one side to the center back. Twist from the nape and secure with bobby pins linking them upwards together. Do the same on the other side but for this side, use “U” shaped pins for light grip so you don't disturb the shape.

5. Once the chignon is in place, take the top section down and blow dry layering a little more anti-frizz cream and volumizing root boost spray to the direction where you want the hair to stay.

6. Mist hairspray on this section and flat iron. Finish look with dry shampoo for extra texture.

Protective Style: Runway to Real Life

After a busy New York Fashion Week, Redken Creative Consultant Guido is across the pond in Milan getting ready for a week of innovative styles, before heading to Paris to finish Fashion Month. Guido kicked off his week in Milan with the Alberta Ferretti show, and created a very 60s chignon with a boyish swoop over the eye and small pieces left out just in front of the ears.

"Alberta has a very strong opinion about the woman she wants to send down the runway each season. This season we decided on a look that was simple 60s feel, yet stylized. Almost twiggy- like but with a boyish feel."
Create the look:
- Create a low side part on the left. Wet hair and apply velvet gelatine 07 cushioning blow-dry gel and blow dry in

- Spray quick dry 18 instant finishing spray in sections and back comb to create the "Bardot-like" height at the crown

- Pull all hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck. Coil ponytail around itself into a chic chignon and pin with hairpins

- Pull pieces out at either side in front of the ear with a tail comb as not to disturb the rest of the hair

- Finish entire look with shine flash 02 glistening mist for extra sheen on the runway (and for your personal runway)!

Playful & Pretty Chignons @ Alice + Olivia Fall 2011

Thomas Dunkin and the Sebastian hair team were on hand backstage styling playful and pretty chignons to complement the designer’s fall ’11 collection.
The collection, along with the hair, evokes timeless elegance and unabashed glamour while speaking to the girl who’s flawlessly fun and full of life. Stacey Bendet creates a wardrobe for a chic, free-spirited female; an empowered individual who is flawlessly fun and full of life, ready for a party, eccentric and captivating.
The Hair Look:
1. To start, dampen the hair with water and generously apply Volupt Spray throughout the hair. Blow the hair out with just your fingers, keeping any natural texture in the hair and making sure the hair has plenty of volume.
2. Once the hair is completely dry, leave a soft parting where the hair falls into a break naturally. From here, spritz all over with Shine Define for flexible control and gently pull back the hair to either the center or to either side.
3. Twist very small, subtle sections on the sides and pull hair back into a large chignon and allow what pieces pop out to remain loose. Secure with a natural-colored hair band, matte bobby pins and fine pins. Pull the chignon into a pretty shape and secure with a few more pins.
4. Finally, spritz the hair with Trilliant for a soft natural hold and beautiful shine.

Lifestyle Leak: The Callet

The Callet is a new phone case that also serves as a wallet. The newly invented and patent pending design makes the Callet easy to use and even easier to take your things with you at the drop of a hat!The innovative Callet comes customized to fit perfectly on many of the the most popular phones that you already use, but it also has easily accessible and ultra-convenient slit-pockets that can hold your cash and cards. The Callet’s unique design allows for easy access to whatever you’re carrying with you and has been specifically engineered to take up a minimal amount of space when holding your stuff, so it doesn’t have that bulky feeling when you’re on the go.
This product seems to be more for the guys than the ladies. It's a bare minimum kind of thing and my bare minimum includes a the phone, cash, cards, AND a small mirror and lipgloss. But I still really like the idea, not to mention The Callet was created and founded in 2009 by four young entrepreneurs from the New York Metropolitan area. They come from all different backgrounds with one common idea: to create a new lifestyle product that everyone should use. After a year of research and development these young entrepreneurs have created the first ever convenient, trendy, and affordable all-in-one accessory for the Blackberry and iPhone.

NYFW 2011 The Hair Look @ Marchesa

Frederic Fekkai lead stylist, Renato Campora created an incredible chignon for Marchesa – drawing inspiration from the Famenco Dancer.
Inspiration: Campora was inspired by the volume, textures, and silhouettes of the Marchesa collection. Drawing from the style of Flamenco Dancer’s chignon, the look was a modern take on a classic style: controlled and sleek in the front, and wildly voluminous. The result was a beautiful and artistically modern hairstyle with the appearance of being windblown.

How to get the look:

Start by saturating the crown of the head with Fekkai Coiff Bouffant Lifting & Texturizing Spray Gel for added texture and grip. Blow dry hair with hands to enhance the natural texture. Part the hair in the center with a fine tooth comb and brush out hair with the Fekkai Classic Brush. Then, brush hair back into a low, tight ponytail at the nape of the neck and secure with a hair tie. Tease the pony with the Fekkai Classic Brush to achieve a slightly tousled look heavy with texture. Secure the end of ponytail with an elastic and gather hair against the back of the head to create an oversized, disheveled, chignon with movement. Spray Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray for a light and airy shape with flexible texture and hold.

NYFW: Quirky Housewife Hair at Peter Som

For Peter Som Fall 2011 is all about real clothes for real women - it's about luxurious ease but with a sense of fun. It's about everyday luxury. The makeup and hair reflect a youthful style that kept the models from looking too mature and "done," but it’s still feminine with a twist. The hair look is inspired by a late-'50s, early-'60s quirky housewife, but with an added rawness to it.
It's a deconstructed half-up bouffant ‘that looks a just a little bit off. The intentionally disheveled hairstyle modernizes the classic updo with a surprising twist to make hair edgier, sexier and quite simply, “cool-looking.” The updo is a bit unexpected and looks like it’s coming undone as it’s very windswept, textured and autumnal. It has that ’90s take on the ’50s — it’s slightly minimal, but now it’s a bit more raw.

Rock the Look:
1. Start with natural, textured hair spraying Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz on the roots.

2. Blow-dry hair upside down using fingers to create volume and texture.

3. Tease the top crown area by back-combing to add texture.

4. Make a side or central part and pull hair back behind the ears; tie at one side into a tight ponytail, leaving out teased section and bottom section of hair. This creates a tight, severe hair line.

5. Brush the top surface of the hair and twist into an asymmetrical French twist; secure with one hair pin.

6. To finish blast hair gently with dryer to loosen hairstyle, and spritz lightly with Wella Professionals Dynamic Fix 45 Second Crafting Spray to hold the look.

Spring 2011 Hair Trend: Blunt Bangs + Long Bob

Rose Byrne debuted a new hairstyle at the amFAR Gala and it seems to be quite a trend for Spring 2011. Harry Josh, celebrity stylist and John Frieda Consultant worked with Rose to decide on her new look. She wanted to make a dramatic change, but not alter the length too much. Harry intentionally left the bangs super long, almost too long. A "French Chic" look a la Jane Birkin. Keep in mind that highlights don't look good with a heavy fringe, so Harry gave Rose a deep, golden caramel color that looks super healthy and shiny.

Mya has also been spotted out with a similar look, featuring super dark tresses and thick bangs.

Songstress, Leonia Lewis has also been spotted wearing some heavy duty bangs, but to switch things up she's sporting her bangs with super long hair. I'm not sure I'm crazy about the bangs with such long hair, what do you think?

NYFW Hair How To: Tracy Reese Fall 2011

TRESemmé Celebrity Stylist Jeanie Syfu, created the hair look for the Fall 2011 Tracy Reese Collection. The collection was inspired by rich hues, sculptural shapes and interesting textural combinations. Each look had some point of brilliance – a shot of metallic, antique copper and silver, or vibrant pop of jewel-tones. Jeanie replicated the same inspiration into the hairstyle.

Rock the look:
Step 1: Work TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Foaming Mousse through damp hair and blow dry upside with a round brush.
Step 2: Spray TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Finishing Spray throughout, make a deep side part and create a reverse wave with a 1 ¼ inch barrel curling iron, keeping all the texture below the ear.
Step 3: Using colored sprays, create surface highlights on the heavier side of the part and brush it through for a soft finish.
Step 4: Spray TRESemmé Fresh Start Dry Shampoo all over for and brush it through with fingers for a matte finish.

Mally Roncal was backstage tending to the models faces.

NYFW Hair Trends: Sleek + Smooth

Eugene Souleiman, Global Creative Director, Wella Professionals created the Hair Look for DKNY Fall ‘11. The hair look for the Fall ’11 DKNY show in New York was inspired by the late ‘60s/ early ‘70s ‘mod’ look, where stiff structured looks gave way to a new modern aesthetic. The hair perfectly partnered the new linear aesthetic of the DKNY catwalk collection, which featured a palette of black and white with splashes of red, orange and navy, and channeled a ‘mod’ ‘60s mood.
“I wanted to create a look that started off with the perfect blow dry but then evolved to a more thoughtful, contemporary finish. I was inspired by the classic ‘Rock Star’s Girlfriend’ look of the late ‘60s, a look that is still much coveted today, as it is the perfect combination of sexiness and class. For me, it’s all about creating the perfect look and then bringing in imperfection, in this look we’ve done that by adding texture for a raw, sexy, ‘lived in’ look” says Eugene Souleiman, Global Creative Director Wella Professionals, Care & Styling.

Rock the Look:
1. Start by creating the perfect blow dry, using Wella Professionals Perfect Setting Blow-dry Lotion. Blow-dry the hair using a round brush to give a smooth finish.
2. Create a side parting and section off the hair around the crown of the head.
3. Divide the crown section into two and wind each section round a large Velcro roller and clip in place; this will give direction and create a little volume. Leave the Velcro rollers in for at least 15 minutes.
4. To finish the style, remove the rollers and spray Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Spray into the hair, blast the hair with a blow dryer to dry the spray, and then massage the crown of the head with your fingers to create texture and fly aways.

Style Tip: Minimize heat by doing a roller set instead of blowdrying.

NYFW Hair Trends: High Texture + Braids

Anthony Cole and the Sebastian hair team were on hand backstage styling the models’ textured, static-embracing tresses with pops of iridescent-colored hair extensions to complement Pamela’s metallic-colored metals in her fall ’11 jewelry collection.

Rock The Hair Look:

1. Start by applying Mousse Forte throughout hair. Starting at the nape of the neck, section out two-inch sections of hair and one at a time divide them in half and twist counter clockwise. Spray the twist with Shine Define, and go over the sections with a flat iron, avoiding the top 1/3 close to the head.
2. Next, focusing on the top third of the hair, divide into small sections spraying Trilliant to hair. Backcomb each small section and then go over them with a flat iron. Let sections cool and then lightly brush with a comb for soft, light texture.
3. Finish by pulling the twisted sections apart and gently rubbing an inflated balloon over the top of the head to create static and natural texture.

NYFW Hair Trends: Buns at Joseph Altuzarra

Frederic Fekkai Lead Stylist, Paul Hanlon created a Chic and Edgy Hairstyle for Joseph Altuzarra’s Fall-Winter 2011 Fashion Week Runway Show. The challenge was to create hair with a wow factor to match the collection. The end result ended up being a modern and beautifully chic take on rock and roll.

How to get the look: Apply Frederic Fekkai Coiff Strong Hold Volume Mousse throughout the hair, and then curl the hair using a 1-inch curling iron. After it cools, brush the curls out and spray the hair with Fekkai Advanced Brilliant Glossing Sheer Shine Mist. Next, secure the front pieces by spraying Fekkai Coiff Sheer Hold Hair Spray. At the crown of the head, spray the hair with Frederic Fekkai Coiff Bouffant Lifting and Texturizing Spray Gel, locking the hair into a beautiful sculpture. Then diffuse the hair to secure the shape of the style.

Rock the Look: Gwyneth Paltrow at 2011 Grammy's

The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards took center stage with Gwyneth Paltrow's "Wild Bohemian" look created by celebrity hairstylist David Babaii. This might just be my own opinion, but I don't think Gwyneth can look "wild", no matter how hard she tries. Even with the "wild bohemian" hair, wild Christian Louboutin Futura multi-colored stiletto bootie Christian Louboutin Heels (which are to DIE for), and the wild pink earrings, she didn't look WILD to me. Cee-lo was WILD, extra WILD but Gwen? No.

To achieve the look, David Babaii always starts with clean fresh hair. The clean canvas theory remains his mantra for every red carpet look. David began by applying Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment and gently massaging into the hair. The Pequi Oil Treatment is used prior to blow drying to deliver silky and shiny hair. With the IT&LY HAIRFASHION Ionic Blow Dryer, David rough dried the hair for texture and volume. Next, he created a center part and began taking random sections wrapping only the center portion of some of the strands (leaving the top and ends free) around a 1" curling iron. Alternating stands were wrapped around the curling iron, leaving only the very tips free. This was done to create uneven curl patterns. Once the strand cooled, David ran his fingers up the strand creating a "fanning effect". To finish, he added additional Couture Colur Pequi Oil Treatment to his hands and tousled the waves for added volume, texture and hold.

The Christian Louboutin Futura multi-colored stiletto bootie is to DIE for, no?

Jenna Ushkowitz Proves You Can Curl Asian Hair

Suave Professionals Celebrity Stylist, Theodore Leaf, created Jenna Ushkowitz’s sexy beach waves at the 2011 Grammy Awards. “I was excited to give Jenna something fun and young for her Grammy hairstyle to go with her sexy dress. The bands of her dress had such great texture so I created her beachy wild hair to echo it!” said Theodore Leaf, Suave Professionals Celebrity Stylist.
Follow Theodore’s simple steps on recreating Jenna’s look:

1. Cleanse hair with Suave Professionals Aloe + Ginseng Volumizing Shampoo & Conditioner to give hair a little volume before styling.

2. Apply wave spray to the mid-shaft and ends and apply Suave Professionals Volumizing Mousse to the roots.

3. Starting at the bottom, wrap and twist small sections of hair and clip them into a pin curl.

4. Next, diffuse the hair to dry without blowing it around too much. When the hair is 75% dry, release the clips and finish diffusing.

5. To create the underpinning in the back, make three ponytails and pin them underneath each other.

6. Finish the look by detailing with an Enzo Milano cone iron to keep the waves soft, and spray a mist of Suave Professionals Touchable Finish Extra Hold Hairspray to keep style in place all night long.

Rock the Look: Jada Pinkett Smith Braid-out at 2011 Grammys

Celebrity hairstylist Marcia Hamilton created Jada Pinkett Smith's look for the 2011 Grammy Awards.

To achieve this look, Marcia began by using White Sands Vegan Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner. She gently towel dried the hair and then sprayed on The Fix from White Sands from roots to ends.

Next, she sectioned the hair vertically from the center of the forehead to the nape. Each section was cornrowed straight back again from the forehead to the nape. The hair was allowed to dry thoroughly using the IT&LY HAIRFASHION Ionic Blow Dryer.

When the hair was completely dry, Marcia applied IT&LY Pure Water Drops to her hands and then gently undid the cornrows.

When all the hair was loose, Marcia had Jada flip her head down and over for dramatic volume. To finish, she added additional Pure Water Drops to her hands and fingers combing hair into place.

Style Tip: Can't cornrow? Plait hair instead!
