Serena Williams is Dead ... Sort of

48027, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - Tuesday November 11, 2010. HOLLYWOOD IS DEAD - CELEBRITIES POSE IN COFFINS AND GO OFF LINE IN 'DIGITAL DEATH' FOR WORLD AIDS DAY: A host of celebrities are raising money for charity by signing off their social networking sites for 24 hours - and playing dead in a series of macabre photographs. Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Hudson, Ryan Seacrest, Elijah Wood, Serena Williams and Swizz Beatz are all pictured lying flat out in their coffins. The stars also suffered a 'digital death' for one day and signed off all their Twitter, Facebook and MySpace accounts to raise cash for World Aids Day on Wednesday. They logged off on Tuesday and will not sign back on until $1 million has been raised for Alicia Keys' Keep A Child Alive cause. During 'The Digital Life Sacrifice' they all filmed 'last tweet and testament' videos which will appear in ads showing them in coffins. Lady Gaga has more than seven million Twitter followers - while 3.5 million have signed up for Justin Timberlake's tweets. Alica Keys said: ''Once I got people on the phone and I was able to paint the concept for them, everybody was in. ''We're trying to make the remark, 'why do we care so much about the death of one celebrity as opposed to millions and millions of people dying in the place that we're all from?'' I like the idea of the Keep a Child Alive campaign but it's all a bit morbid don't you think? In attempts to raise money for charity a bunch of celebs will be logging off their social media accounts and playing dead "socially", meaning they will not sign back on until $1 million has been raised for Alicia Keys' Keep A Child Alive cause.

Ombre Hair Color on Black Women

The Ombre hair trend doesn't look like it's dying down any time soon (no pun intended). What exactly is the Ombre look? Dark roots that gradually get lighter leading down to light tresses, the result is a honey dipped look on dark hair. The color look looks great on women of color too!

Ashanti with her Ombre locks styled half up and half down

Raven Symone with Ombre waves and down to there curls

Beyonce with Ombre + Bangs!

Will you be trying the Ombre trend?

Motions Marula Shampoo

(Motions Marula Natural Therapy Shampoo, $6.00 Amazon.com)

When you have a closet full of hair care products it's easy for a great product to get pushed to the back and forgotten. Motions Marula Natural Therapy Shampoo is one of those products. I just dug it out from the back and it's still amazing! The shampoo is super lush and it doesn't strip my hair or make it dry like other shampoos can. After just shampooing my hair, it makes my hair feel like it's had an instant conditioner on it.

Motions Marula Shampoo is still a winner!

Rihanna's Long Red Hair

47550, NEW YORK, NEW YORK - Tuesday November 16, 2010. Rihanna has a busy day running between radio stations Z100 and Hot 97 in NYC. The hotpants wearing pop singer never lets her fans down as she stops to sign autographs and pose with fans (one who presented her with a disc). Photograph: Wagner Az, PacificCoastNews.com

So now it looks like Rihanna is rocking a long red 'do. To be honest, when I first saw her with the long red locks, I just figured she was on her way to have her hair done, meaning cut, put in an updo, or something. Looks like I was totally wrong, instead the long hair look is what she was going for. What do you think of it?

Beauty Break: Keyshia Cole's Nails

In her latest video, Long Way Down Keyshia Cole shows off her engagement ring and some pretty 3D nail designs. I'm loving the bow design on her index finger! It's super duper cute. If you want to get a similar look, find a nail salon that does Calgel.

Beauty Break: Made from Earth

Lifestyle Leak: Bahama Breeze

I'm not exactly a chain restaurant kind of girl, but there are a few that I happen to really enjoy. The newest chain restaurant that I've added to the list that I like is Bahama Breeze, with it's fresh and creative menu selections and delicious Frozen Bahamarita I'd say it's up there on my list of faves. Specifically, it's the Frozen Bahamarita that I LOVE and keep going back for, made with strawberry, kiwi, and mango ice mixed with a little Cuervo Gold what's not to love?

Lavender Jamaican Black Castor Oil

(Lavendar Jamaican Black Castor Oil, $8.99 OilsfromJamaica.com)

I'm a big of Jamaican Black Castor Oil because it really does work to help hair grow in faster. After a while the people over at Tropical Isles added lavender to the original verison to help cover up the smokey scent of the regular stuff. I've tried both and I love both. The original Jamaican Black Castor Oil scent never bothered me and I never understood why people complained about the scent. Truth be told, the lavendar scented Jamaican Black Castor Oil smells just a tiny bit better than the original, so really I don't even think it's worth it.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil Conditioner

(Black Castor Oil Protein Conditioner, $11.99 Oilsfromjamaica.com)

For a while there I was adding some JBCO (jamaican black castor oil) to my conditioners to provide additional softness and help make my hair stronger and healthier. Now there is no need to play kitchen mixtress, I can buy Black Castor Oil Protein Conditioner to help remedy my hair and scalp issues. The conditioner contains black castor oil, cactus oil, pimento oil, mayonnaise, apple cider and other hair friendly ingredients. Together, these ingredients are chock full of Essential Fatty Acids, protein, vitamins and minerals that builds, repairs, energizes and return your hair to a state of good health. It's excellent for dried damaged hair, split ends, hair breakages, dandruff etc. Tropic Isle Living Black Castor Oil Protein Conditioner will leave your hair light, bouncy and with a glow.

This conditioner gets an A+ from me. The only downside is that your hair will feel like it has some oil in it even after rinsing out the conditioner. If you plan on wearing your hair straight this might not be for you, but since I'm avoiding heat and air drying it's perfect!

Self Relax: Cantu Clinical Straightening Relaxer

So a few weeks ago I self relaxed using Cantu Clinical Straightening No Lye Relaxer System. I must say that this relaxer is the best at home relaxer I've ever used. Usually I have to turn to other products along the way while I'm relaxing whether it's vaseline to base my scalp and hair line or a better conditioner to thoroughly moisturize my hair after relaxing, but with the Cantu relaxer everything I needed plus more was included with the kit.

cantu® Shea Butter Advanced Clinical Straightening No-Lye Relaxer System, includes:

Step 1: Pre-Care Protective Balm. This step is applied to the nape of the neck and hairline to protect exposed skin during the relaxer mixture application.
Step 2: Anti-Breakage Pre-Care Treatment. This step is applied only to hair that has been previously relaxed as it helps to reduce the possibility of unnecessary breakage or damage.
Step 3: Deep Conditioning Straightening Crème
Step 4: Liquid Activator
Step 5: Neutralizing Color Indicator Shampoo with Anti-Itch. This step suspends the relaxing process and ensures thorough rinsing to reveal any relaxer residue. Anti-itch formula penetrates deep to provide instant relief of a dry, itchy scalp.
Step 6: Intensive Reconstructing Treatment. This step repairs damage caused by chemicals, heat or color applied to hair. Helps restore incredible softness, elasticity and shine to even the most severely damaged hair or dry, brittle hair.
Step 7: Deep Conditioning Moisturizing Treatment. This step restores moisture and infuses Shea Butter to nourish and strengthen hair.

The only thing I switched out was the gloves and not because they were those cheap paper-y kind, because they weren't they were good quality latex (powdered) gloves but I'm allergic to those so I had to use special gloves. I relaxed my hair just like how I usually self relax and it came out great, the Intensive Reconstructing Treatment followed by the Deep Conditioning Moisturizing Treatment is exactly what freshly relaxed hair needs and finally it's available right in a relaxer kit.
The kit should be available in your local drugstore for about $20 but unfortunately I can't find it around my way. For more info checkout Cantu.com

Dry Heat = Dry Hair

Now with the weather cooling down the heat will be cranking up, but with that comes dry heat. For some reason apartments seem to have the worst possible heating and it drys everything out from your skin, lips, nails, feet, hands, and of course your hair! Last year I got a humidifier to help with my lips and chronic sore throat due to dry air, but I realized it actually does work to help keep your hair moist as well as everything else. Since I mostly use my pillowcap instead of tying my hair up the moist air can actually get to my hair now and I think it's helping with the moisture level in my hair as well as my lips, throat, and skin.

More about my humidifier here.

Beauty Break: Estee Lauder Sensuous Noir

I absolutely love Estee Lauder's Sensuous and now they are introducing Sensuous Noir - a deeper, more mysterious and even more captivating expression of feminine sensuality . . .

Like Sensuous, Sensuous Noir is built from a core of Melted Wood NaturePrint, Honey and Amber. The change? Sensuous Noir the floral aspects have been intensified to reinforce the deeper sensuality. By adding Exotic Purple Rose, Rose Essence and Spiced Lily, a darker, midnight garden aura was created. Also, a Crème Noir Accord and Patchouli Prisma – a new extraction of an iconic symbol of sensuality -have been added to “darken” the core signature accord of the Melted Woods. Finally, Sensuous Noir increases the presence of Black Pepper, Vanilla, Amber and Benzoin, contributing to the rich darkness of the fragrance. The result is a new, even richer, sensual dimension of the fragrance that is signature Sensuous, but meant for after dark.

Run, don't walk to your nearest Estee Lauder counter and try it out, I bet you won't leave without buying!

Lifestyle Leak: Southern Belle Montclair

I absolutely love to go out and eat, that's why you're typical run of the mill fad diets will never work for me and I've accepted that. Anywho, with that being said I found a brand spankin' new brunch spot that I absolutely love. Introducing, Southern Belle in Montclair, NJ. The decor is crisp and clean but also mellow and relaxing, I especially love the huge padded headboard look seen on the walls.

But I'm sure you want to know more about what makes this a great brunch location. Well aside from the fact that usually I have to travel into NYC for a decent brunch spot and now I don't, the menu is right on point offering things like Chicken and Waffles, Sunday Morning French Toast, and cheese grits as well as classics with southern flair like the Southern Eggs Benny which is your typical eggs benedict but instead of an english muffin it's on top of a homemade biscuit.

Plus, to compliment the brunch items the Specialty Drink menu doesn't disappoint. I ordered a Mint Julep (non-alcoholic featuring tea and fresh mint) which was refreshing a delicious to a tea drinker such as myself. The boyfriend on the other hand, hated the Mint Julep but loved the Southern Sunrise which was just as yummy as the Julep.

My favorite items were the Fried Chicken which was crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside, seasoned perfectly it gave my Gram's Fried chicken a sprint for it's money. YES, it was that good. In fact, I called my mother from the table and told her, "don't tell gram but I'm eating chicken that's just as good as her's ... maybe even better!" The waffle was just a typical belgium waffle, if you're interested nothing special.

The Southern Eggs Benny was good too, but it wasn't super duper filling but no eggs benedict really ever is. Also, making it onto my list of favorites was the homemade Miss Jane's Crumb Cake that comes to your table as soon as you sit down. The topping is crumbly and good, while the bottom layer is moist and rich, making it the very best crumb cake I've tasted. Me and my boyfriend agreed we'd be back and guess what? We went back that very night for dinner! More on that another time!

Beauty Break: Essie Fall 2010 Swatches

My favorite nail polish brand is Essie. In my eyes Essie can do no wrong, I love all the color collections and the Fall into Fashion Collection is no different. So far, I've tried Sew Psyched on my fingers, which is a muted sea moss green shade that looks very now since Military looks are all the rage. This color will compliment a Military inspired outfit with no problems. Plus, it looks great on brown skin.

I also tried Limited Addiction and it's super pretty on toes. It's a sexy and seductive deep red shade, the more layers the deeper the red. For some reason this shade makes me think of the HBO series (my favorite HBO series) True Blood. The only thing is that as soon as a red polish starts to chip, I mean even the tiniest little chip, I have to either remove it all or fix it right then and there. Chipped red nails is a serious no-no in my book, it looks super duper tacky.

Rounding out the colors that I've tried so far is In Stitches, is a classic shade that looks best on shorter nails. Usually, anything in mauve looks old school but I actually like this color on brown skin. It's a dusty mauve/rose shade that is anything but new, yet still fits right in with this collection nicely.

Now I can't wait to try out the Winter 2010 Essie Collection, view that here!

Budget Babe Hair Care: Splurge vs Skimp

Over the years, I've become quite the product junkie. Hair care items whether it be accessories, shampoo, conditioner, treatments, pomades, gels, leave-in treatment, you name it and I have to have it. Hair products are similar to makeup items because there are certain products I splurge on and others that go I the cheap route. Here are my top 3 Splurge vs Skimp categories!

Splurge:

Deep treatments
Leave-in Conditioners
Shears

Skimp:

Shampoo
Co-Wash conditioners
Gels
QUESTION: What do you skimp and splurge on?

Wrap Lotion to Blow Dry

Motions Foaming Wrap Lotion is a lightweight foaming lotion, traditionally used for thicker and coarser hair types but now it is an emerging cult favorite amongst beauty industry insiders and high profile editorial and celebrity hair stylists.

This do-all wonder is great for a variety of hair types and does everything from enhancing curls, to holding wraps, wet sets and thermal styles, but is also great for fine/thinner hair types as a texturizing and volumizing mousse. The perfect pre-blow dry lotion, that gives you gorgeous volume, without the stiffness or residue that other texturizing products can leave behind. I never thought to use a Foaming Wrap Lotion before I blow dried my hair, but now that I have I had to share with the world.

Lifestyle Leak: Household Chores

I hate cleaning and doing simple chores around the house so much that I have a "cleaning lady" come in every other week. Even though she does a great job I still have to keep things up when she's not around and do my own laundry. It might sound like a waste of money but I work really hard and when I get home the last thing I want to do is pull out the cleaning supplies and start working again. When I do have to tidy up and do laundry the types of products I pick help make chores a little more luxe.

The Good Home Co. dryer sheets are amazing! The scents are out of this world and make folding laundry a little less of a headache because I like to sniff the clothes as I go. My favorite scent is Beach Days. Beach days is a fresh scent that reminds me of summer.

Caldrea is another line of products that I love! You pick the scent that suits you and then you select the products you need. It's great because instead of your home being super clean and smelling like different cleaning products, you come home it's amazing clean and it all smells like Sea Salt Neroli (that's my favorite). From the bathroom to the kitchen to the bedroom and everything in between. Then when you need a fragrance pick me up around the house light the scent matching candles and spritz the couch, sheets, and curtains with the home fragrance.

Another tip: Caldrea gift sets make a great hostess gift - the holidays are quickly approaching!

Rihanna turns down the Red

So Rihanna was recently spotted turning on the Christmas lights at Westfield shopping centre in west London but what I noticed was how her once fire engine red hair is beginning to look darker. I actually prefer this red to the bright red, how about you? It's still bright, but it's not as 'Loud' as it once was.

Milan Fashion Week Spring 2011 Hair

While most focus on fashion or the makeup look during runway shows of course I'm admiring the hair. For Spring 2011 Fashion Week in Milan, one hairstylist stood out from the crowd. Guido for Redken Consultants did not let me down not once, every style was unique and caught my attention so I had to share some of my favorites with you guys.

For Versace Spring/Summer 2011 it looks like Guido took a cue from some of the ladies on the hair care boards! The look was high fashion hair meets the length retention method of baggying the ends. At Versace the hair was slicked back into a low bun covered by PVC for a patent leather feel.

"Donatella and I discussed this look quite a bit; as typically she loves big, voluminous sexy hair for her show. Through this departure from that, we wanted to show that hair kept close to the head that draws attention to the face can be just as high glamour as big hair. This is a look anyone can wear, as long as she has the confidence to allow her face the extra exposure exposed. Also, not using so much product could also tone down the look a bit too for everyday. And the accessories, like the pieces of PVC plastic, can add a bit of fun into such a glamorous, high fashion shape." - Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Rock the Look:

- Apply Redken hardwear 16 super strong gel in sections thoroughly through entire head of hair all the way to just past the nape of the neck, using a comb to create a smooth texture with no part.
- Smooth hair all the way back on the top and sides and pull together in a low ponytail secured at the nape of the neck.
- Coil hair around itself into a knot and pin into place.
- Take a piece of PVC plastic (or any type of square shaped material you'd like to use) and secure around the bun with an elastic, allowing the ends of the square piece to essentially "stick out."
- Finish entire look with slicking on heavy amounts of glass 01 smoothing serum for that glassy, patent leather texture.

The 1930s hairstyle at Prada’s Spring/Summer 2011 Collection was playful and fun. Guido kept the hair close to the head in a high shine, high gloss texture with two playful knots – think mannequin-like hair with a lacquer finish, almost like it’s painted on. Or think back to Missy Elliot rocking the vinyl bubble suit with the ill finger waves!

“We wanted a carefree, youthful and fun look, but also have that high Prada glamour that represents the design house. The two knots at the back of the head emphasize the playful girl yet the high gloss, shine and finger waves make it glamorous and impactful on the runway.” – Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Rock the Look:

Create a deep side part, and apply Redken hardwear 16 super-strong sculpting gel in generous amounts to the entire head, smoothing the part over the side.
- Next, create finger waves on the forehead with a tail comb.
- Divide the back of the head into two sections with a straight middle part and twist each one into a small knot at the base of the head about 2-3 inches apart, so you can still see a bit of the knots from the front.
- Secure knots with pins and finish them with forceful 23 super strength finishing spray for hold. To create the final touch, apply a generous amount of glass 01 smoothing serum all over for that wet, shiny, lacquered look!

The hair style for the Alberta Ferretti’s Spring/Summer 2011 Collection was inspired by a rock and roll vibe – very Bohemian with matte, natural textured. The Collection is features very long, flowing feminine dresses with a "hippie" feel, so the hair really complements the clothes rather than contrasting it.

"Alberta Ferretti is a show that women always look forward to because the fashion is very feminine – the kind of clothes any woman would want to wear. To complement the easiness on the runway, I created natural bohemian hair, yet still keeping each woman unique by simply enhancing her natural texture." – Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Rock the Look:

- Apply a generous amount of velvet gelatine 07 cushioning blow dry gel in your hands and work into damp hair, applying it by scrunching it in sections concentrating at the roots to bring out the natural texture
- Finger dry hair with a blow dryer, scrunching sections towards the scalp and lightly twist pieces away from the face.
- Before going on the runway or out on the town, rough up the texture with your hands just a bit, but not touching it too much to keep the matte texture.

Length Update

I haven't been taking too many pictures of my hair lately, but as I was cleaning out the photo gallery of my phone I saw this photo and decided to share. I can't tell you exactly when it was taken but it was before my birthday (September 10th).

Red Hair Tips

Marisa Moon of the Sam Brocato Salon gives great tips for red heads and wanna be red heads this season. With stars like Rihanna rocking bright red hair there's no surprise this is the most sought after seasonal color. Red is warm and glowing with tones ranging from bold true reds to soft coppers to a hint of strawberry. “Be inspired by autumn leaves and add richness and warmth to faded-out summer locks,” says Marisa. Schedule an appointment with your colorist to find which hue is best for your skin tone and eye color.

Whether you’d like to enhance your natural color, add dimension, balance your previous color, blend-away grays, or add gloss and long-lasting shine, Marisa suggests a new color formula that heralds professional performance at its finest. The new Brocato Color Project is a demi-permanent, ammonia-free and MEA-free formula that deposits color without lifting natural pigment. It is infused with Murumuru Seed Butter, Macadamia Seed Oil and Green Tea Seed Oil that aid in imparting moisture rich color. The leading professional demi-permanent brands are formulated with MEA, a derivative of ammonia and a registered skin irritant. Brocato Color Project uses Amino Methyl Propanol (AMP) as its key ingredient, or alkalizer, and AMP is neither an ammonia derivative nor a skin irritant.
