Hair Year End Review

2009 was a great year for me. I started a new career and got my first free lance writing job for AOL Black Voice on Beauty, if you haven't checked me out over there please do so. On the hair front, I got an awesome haircut that was super flattering and beyond function for me and that's about it. I was able to maintain the health of my hair, but I didn't make any huge length increases and I didn't make any process in my problem area. Hopefully, 2010 will be a little bit better on the hair front.

May 2009 after a salon visit to Zoku Salon in Jersey.

That's a shot of the back of my hair from that day. My hair was longer than shoulder length and just about APL.

Bantu Knots gone wrong at the end of May 2009, turned into a "down 'do"

July 2009, passed up APL and headed to BSL.

At the end of July, after my hair cut in NYC.

Here is my hair right after that hair cut in July 2009.

Most recent length shot, Dec. 17th 2009.

Tippi Shorter Hair Style Tips

Tippi Shorter is now the Global Stylist Advisor over at Avon! Remember I met her at the Dr. Miracle's event this past year? Well she was rocking her signature "big, sexy, healthy hair" and I could really tell she was into healthy hair above all else!

Over the past 15 years, Tippi has made a name for herself and her "big, sexy, healthy hair" by offering great style that can be easily re-created at home. "It’s not always about using the newest products, it’s about using the best products for that particular client’s hair,” Tippi explains. I got a chance to ask Tippi a few questions about hair styles and here are her answers, enjoy!
1. What's the perfect 'do for a New Year's party for women with short hair, medium hair, and long hair? For a woman with short hair, I think a sleek, smooth bob is a classic, sophisticated style. If you have medium hair, go for a wavy look with tons of volume – this is great for that “in between” length. For those of you that have long hair, I prefer big, bouncy soft curls. This complements any outfit, without taking away from it.

2. What's a great style for black women with natural hair?
Just as it is. African American women have so many different types of natural curl, I suggest finding products that complement and enhance your curl.

Root Awakening Review + Giveaway

I don't know how I let these products slip by without reviewing them, actually both the shampoo and conditioner are in my shower right both half empty because I've been using them. I just never got around to writing about them. What am I talking about? John Frieda Root Awakening! Just when you thought the John Frieda line was at a stand still just pumping out frizz ease products, he launched Root Awakening - I mean surely you've heard about this line and have seen it in your local drugstore. I even let you guys know about it as soon as I heard about it, back in February of this year.

Anyway, on to the review. Both the shampoo and conditioner are very moisturizing, after shampooing I was able to detangle my hair without using conditioner. That is something I hardly ever do but I was able to after just using the shampoo which speaks to how moisturizing it really is. Since Root Awakening products are designed to feed the roots and hydrate the scalp this combo is perfect for someone battling dry scalp issues. The products are also formulated with effective levels of natural Eucalyptus, so each product purifies and nourishes the roots and scalp to promote healthier-looking growth.

Want to try the Root Awakening line for yourself? Enter to win Root Awakening Shampoo, Conditioner, and the Root Awakening Health Boosting Detangling Spray.

Rollersets - Salon Visit

Sure I could do my own rollersets at home, but really I don't have the time. It takes me forever to get the rollerset right and then once I'm all done drying, I still have to take a lot of time to "fix" it. Fix meaning smooth out the edges, straighten out the roots, and then style it. It's just not worth the effort, when I can go to the Dominican salon around the corner and get it done quickly for $22 (including wash, deep conditon, set, and blow only the roots). It's $22 that's well spent and I've found that if you speak up you get what you want and avoid problems like too much heat, rough handling, and other problems.

Plus, I don't even go that often, lately I've just been using my hand dryer on low and wearing buns.

Mega-Tek Growth Mix Update

Ladies, I'm reporting back as a follow-up to this video, Mega-Tek Super Growth Mix. I'm glad to say I've been using my mix on a every other day to every three days basis! It finally looks like I'm sticking to using the mixture this time around. My hopes are to see an increase in growth in the nape area of my hair as well as an overall increase in the speed of my hair growth and because I'm using Jamaican Black Castor Oil ($10.00 Amazon.com) as an ingredient in the mix, I'll be also on the look-out for increased thickness as well. As of right now, I do not have any comparison pics but they will be coming.

Also, I have not noticed any increase in the speed of my hair growth, but I have noticed a bit of an increase in thickness. My hair feels like it's slightly more dense than before.

Beat a Dry Itchy Scalp

The harsh winter weather can cause all of your skin to dry out, that includes your scalp. An itchy dry scalp drive you crazy! Use these tips to help beat the dry itchy scalp blues:

1. scalp massages - a personal favorite because of the use of oil to treat the scalp and your fingertips will gentle relax your soul. Yes, really it's that deep.

2. humifider - I don't actually have a humifider currently, but it's on my list of the things to buy because not only will it keep my scalp from drying out it will help all the skin on my body stay nice and moisturized.

3. Creamier shampoo - Sulfate free is the way to go, but also try shampoos that have a creamier consistancy instead of a gel look to them for an instant boost in moisture & don't forget the deep conditioner!

4. add oil to your conditioner - While we're talking deep conditioner; add a few drops of your favorite oil to your favorite conditioner and watch it become your favorite treatment - best part you have both ingredients already!

5. wear a hat - silk or satin lined of course! Having trouble finding a suitable silk or satin lined hat? Take the hat and some silk or satin fabric to your local tailor and in days you'll be completely set for just a few dollars.

Mini Success: Met a Goal

Alright ladies, I'm happy to report I've met one of my hair length goals. My hair on the sides is finally armpit length (APL). Sorry for the quality of the images but it's from my iPhone, I saw I made it and started snapping away! That's it for now, but feel free to share some of your own hair goals in the comments section.

Scalp Care: Massage vs Scritching

Do you treat your scalp as good as you do your hair? I mean really, most of use spend all this time moisturizing and sealing our hair in sections to protect our ends but what have you done for your scalp lately?

Personally, scalp massages are my favorite for of scalp treatments. It's easy to do and doesn't take up that much time. Not only that, but it's incredibly relaxing after a long day. My oil of choice for scalp massages is coconut oil of course. Incorporating scalp massages is a great way to increase blood flow to the scalp and provide moisture and nourishment. Dry flaky scalps will be a thing of the past. Try adding a few drops of peppermint oil or cinnamon oil to your coconut oil for a tingly sensation that's sure to please. ((Please do yourself and your scalp a favor and read up on essential oils and carrier oils before becoming a mixologist to ensure you don't make a mess of things - essential oils are not meant to be applied directly to the scalp))

Another scalp treatment is something that I don't personally do because it's too rough for me, but it's called scritching. It's a funky combination of scratching and itching your scalp with your fingernails or the teeth of a comb (ouch!) to loosen up whatever debris might be there.

Hair Oil Series: Coconut Oil

Hair Oil Series: Cocasta Shikakai Oil

(Cocasta Shikakai Oil, $11.00 Hairveda.com)

Continuing with the Hair Oils mini series, I'm reviewing yet another of my favorite oils. HairVeda's Cocasta Shikakai Oil, the scent is amazing and it never fails to leave my hair feeling soft. The very first time I used the oil I thought it would end up being way too heavy for my hair, because it goes on feeling something like castor oil. But the scent hooked me in and the shine my hair had after applying it was crazy, it gave new meaning to hair bling, but even still I went to sleep thinking my hair would be heavy and weighed down. I was completely wrong, because in the morning my hair was just soft and shiny. The key is to use a tiny amount and start at the ends working your way up the hair shaft. I would not recommend this oil for use as a pre-poo treatment because it's too good for just overnight use. I like to apply it at night and leave it on my hair, no rinsing this stuff out. I plan on using this oil in my rotation all winter long.

Product Tip: Always apply before bedtime to give the oil time to fully sink in to avoid heavy hair.

Hair Oil Series: Jamaican Black Castor Oil

(Jamaican Black Castor Oil, $10.00 Amazon.com)

A new find for me, Jamaican Black Castor Oil is probably an old favorite for most of you. JBCO is well known for adding thickness and crazy shine to hair, but I initially found it way to heavy to use as a scalp massage oil or even to seal in moisture. My hair was just not having it! But I was determine to incorporate JBCO into my hair regimen one way or another to see if I actually reaped the benefits so many ladies have already seen. My plan? You might remember it from this video right here. My Super Duper Hair Growth Treatment - a mix of Mega-Tek and Jamaican Black Castor Oil. See Anti Hair Slave TV for the official recipe and deets, but I must say mixing it up helped with the heaviness and I am able to apply the mix every 2-3 days.

Keri Hilson's New Bob

KIIS FM's Jingle Ball 2009 - Arrivals

Keri Hilson was recently spotted rocking a new bob! Her hair is darker than before but she still kept in that signature gold streak. This bob is shorter than before with some longer wispy pieces in the front. What do you think? Cute or no?

Hair Oil Series: Suki Pure

(Suki Pure Hair & Scalp Oil, $29.95 Beautorium.com)

Suki Pure Hair & Scalp Oil is a treat in a tiny glass bottle. Not only does it work wonders for my hair, it's also amazing for the scalp. It's awesome for pre-shampoo treatments, sealing in moisture, and providing scalp relief with a scalp massage. You might also remember when I use the oil to keep my hair lush on a flight. Airplanes always suck my skin and hair dry so that time I was prepared, if you plan on doing any traveling via plane this holiday season you just might want to read up on my tip. Suki Pure Hair & Scalp oil is fabulous for all different types of hair.

Hair Oil Series: Philip B Rejuvenating Oil

(Philip B. Rejuvenating Oil For Dry to Damaged Hair, $30 Beauty.com)
Winter is here. I'm cold when I leave my place to go to work and I can't go out on my balcony to see the city without wrapping up in my cashmere robe. When it gets cold, I switch from body lotion to body oil to keep soft so it's only natural that I switch from creams and lotions to butters and oils and I'm not just talking body products, this goes for my hair too. Philip B makes one of my favorite oils. The Rejuvenating Oil is perfect for dry and damaged hair. It smells divine and leaves my hair soft. I apply a tiny bit to the ends of my hair and my scalp as a treatment and continue with a scalp massage to make sure it all gets worked in well.

AHS Wish List: Hair Steamer

What I really want for my hair is a hair steamer. I've heard too many fantastic things about the power of hair steaming for it to be ignored any longer, I need a steamer. If you haven't heard steaming helps open up the hair cuticle to allow moisture to better penetrate into hair, leave hair super soft and touchable. The price is upwards of $100, but I've been waiting and waiting and I've finally decided that I NEED a steamer!

So ladies, dish please! What brand of steamer do you have and why do you love it?!

Holiday Hair: Minimal Heat Required

Diane Kruger lit up the red carpet recently with this modern day twist on a classic Hollywood style. Her hairstylist, Richard Marin, gave us the scoop on four simple steps to re-create this holiday hair style at home.

• Dry hair with head tilted forward using an ionic dryer for maximum shine and volume (try the Remington Professional Dryer).

• Part hair to side. Using a one inch barrel curling iron, section hair in pieces that are 1½ inches by 3 inches wide. Curl in one direction for a uniform wave pattern, and let curls cool to set.

• Brush hair out in a downward motion. Keep brush close to scalp, and finger waves will form. Brush waves to one side, and secure in side ponytail.

• Roll hair into smooth bun with the ends poking out, and pin into place. Finish with a touch of hairspray and bit of shine spray. To glam it up like Diane, add a sparkly hair accessory.

The Remington Professional line includes a dryer, one-inch flat iron and two-inch flat iron. Available exclusively at Walmart; $50 each.

Why I like this style so much is because if you skip the blowdryer and allow your hair to dry naturally using the scarf method or better yet Bantu knots you will have tons and tons of volume and body. Once your hair is completely dry you can then use your hands to smooth it down and to the side, if need be use a curling iron to create a few curls and voila! Same 'do with a lot less heat!
