Growing Out Gracefully: Bangs

Blunt bangs are still pretty hot, but the trend has cooled down substantially. If you took the plunge and cut some bangs you might be thinking great, how do I grow these things out without looking super obvious? I say, turn to Nicole Richie. I absolutely love everything about Nicole Richie's style and hairstyle, something about her is effortlessly chic, yet down to earth cool. Nicole is the queen of having bangs then letting them grow, yet she never looks obvious about it.

Follow Nicole's lead and grow out your bangs gracefully with these easy tips!

1. Don't fight the bangs: Instead of trying to hide your bangs once they've grown into your field of vision just part them like the photo above and sweep them to each side.

2. Braid them back: Braids are super hot for Fall 2009, in fact they are an official Fall Hair Trend! Add some braids in your hair going back and catch your bangs in the braids and voila! They are gone!

3. Hide with a headband: Need a super quick, super easy solution? Just hide them with a headband!

Beauty Star Review: Retro-Chic Conditioning Potion

Hey Ladies! Guess what? I'm a Beauty Star on Beautychoice.com, basically what it means is they send me products to review, they are looking for honest reviews of products that they sell on their website. Perfect for me, because you know I love hair products and I also love dishing about they here with my lovely readers!

I will always let you guys know when I'm doing a post here as a Beauty Star, the title will lead with Beauty Star Review.

Alright, now on the review. Retro-Chic Conditioning Potion comes in an adorable pink bottle that reminds me of a drugstore brand that I can't put my finger on right now. Anyway, you know I'm always sniffing product before testing them out and this one was no different. The scent is sweet and a bit fruity smelling.

Product Description: Joshua Bernard, a professional hair artist and President of Retro-Chic International, has longed to develop a hair treatment system that is superior for restoring damaged hair, locking-in color, and providing lasting protection against the drying effects of harsh sunlight and chemical environments. To make this possible, Joshua has teamed with two of the world’s leading molecular scientists to develop the industry’s first "Microcapsule Remediation System" for hair conditioning. Conditioning Potion is designed to enrich the hair with moisture. Retro-Chic Conditioning Potion™ will replenish naturally chic or chemically altered hair to its fullest.

AHS Thoughts: First off, the price is a little bit steep for anyone on a budget. At $16.00 it's over $1.00 per oz. Other than that, I liked the conditioner. The scent is pleasant and after just a few minutes on while in the shower it left my hair feeling very soft and moisturized. This is a good conditioner to use in between deep conditioning.

Availability: Conditioning Potion is available at BeautyChoice.com for $16.00

Jilbere Hot Air Brush

I picked up a new hair toy at Marshall's. (side note: if you haven't browsed the beauty section in your local Marshall's in a while you are missing out.) The Jilbere Hot Air Brush, it's part hair dryer and part round brush. The product seems like a dream, when I get blow outs and they use a round brush and the blow dryer my hair is sleek and straight so I figured I would get similar results with this product.

Product Description: The Jilbere Hot Air Brush features ceramic technology that eliminates frizz, and assists in the breakdown of bacteria buildup in the hair.
Features Ceramic technology eliminates frizz, Emits ion reflectives which enhance the vitality of hair, 1000 watts, Two heat settings perfect for all hair types, Heats Up to 446 F
360 degree swivel cord prevents tangled or damaged cords, Hot air styles and completes drying process simultaneously, Ultra lightweight professional motor, Smooth nonstick ceramic barrel provides maximum heat transfer.

The Jilbere Hot Air Brush's ceramic barrel styles and dries hair simultaneously. Use to create volume, texture, curl, or smooth and straighten. The ceramic barrel technology evenly spreads heat for faster styling. Ceramic helps create smooth, silky hair.

AHS Thoughts: What a major disappointment, basically my hair looked just like when I dry it with a blowdryer without the round brush. My hair was large and poufy and not at all sleek and straight. I really thought I would get results similar to using a separate round brush and blow dryer and I didn't. Upside: the dryer is light weight and easy to use, my arm hardly felt tired while using it and it did manage to get my roots straighter than a regular blow dryer. Bonus - because I picked it up from Marshalls I only paid $12.99 instead of the $32.00 that Sally's Beauty Supply charges for the same product.

ApHogee Pro-Vitamin Leave-In Conditioner

For a long time ApHogee was a brand that I shied away from because they are known for their heavy protein treatments. Slowly but surely, I'm opening up to different types of protein treatments and to the ApHogee brand. The other night I tried two products from the ApHogee product line, the ApHogee Pro-vitamin Leave-In Conditioner and the Keratin & Green Tea Restructurizer. I was in between washes and I wanted to do something different with my hair, so I spritzed on some of the Pro-Vitamin Leave-In and two strand twisted my hair. Once I was finished I followed up with the Keratin & Green Tea Restructurizer and the next day my twist out was so nice. My hair felt soft and the twists were set very well, I will continue to use these products. I guess I was expecting my hair to feel dry and hard, but it was the total opposite, it was soft and strong feeling.

Next up: ApHogee Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor. Have you used it? Give me your thoughts!

Healthy Sheen Spray

Coconut oil is my favorite hair oil and guess what? I found a coconut oil spray cooking spray in Whole Foods that contains Coconut Oil, Soy Letcithin, and Propellant.  Those are the only three ingredients so I picked it up and I've been using it as a hair sheen oil.

My next purchase will be the Grapeseed Oil Spray.

Celebrity Hair Causes Uproar

Whenever a celeb does something different with their hair, it causes a bit of an uproar especially with hair junkies like us right?

First, let's take a peek at Rihanna's new shaved 'do.  Personally, I love Rihanna and I think her stylists are on point.  Some people argue with me saying she has been 'created' by the industry with all the stylists but in my opinion you have to have a certain something to really rock the look and Rihanna hits it every single time.

Want to rock Rihanna's Look?  Here are some tips from hairstylist Ursula Stephen who has been the mastermind behind so many Rihanna 'dos.

AHS:  So you want this new Rihanna 'do, what do you ask your stylist for?
Ursula Stephen: For Rihanna’s half-shaved cut, ask your stylist to have a “fade” (like a buzz cut) on the side and a longer layered cut on the top. To keep it styled like a rockstar, use a flat iron to bring out the shine.

AHS:  Okay so once you have the cut, how do you style it?
U.S.: To style the cut, blow dry damp hair straight up in the air and lightly spritz a hairspray such as Motions Light Hold Spritz. Section hair and again flat iron hair in an upward vertical motion to keep the volume. Use a bit of of soft hold pomade such as CHI Pliable Polish and run it throughout the entire top of the head. Using a bit more of the pomade, separate sections of the hair to make it look wild. Finally, use a teasing comb to tease the top of the head finish with more of the Motions Light Hold Spritz.

On to another celeb that made hair headlines, Michelle Obama. While country singers like Brad Paisley and Charley Pride brought the beat to Wednesday night’s “A Country Music Celebration” at the White House, it was Michelle Obama’s NEW faux short look that stole the show.

Create the first lady’s faux crop for under $15 with Soft & Beautiful! Follow these simple steps to achieve Michelle’s stunning style, perfect for hot summer days:
  1. Apply Soft & Beautiful StyleProtect Spritz on wet hair from roots to ends. Blow-dry hair with a medium sized round brush, to create volume and lift.
  2. Gather hair in a loose pony at the nape and tuck under, pinning with bobby pins as you go.
  3. Finish with Soft & Beautiful Oil Sheen Spray to leave hair looking healthy and vibrant!

Last but certainly not least, Solange.  Solange was spotted wearing a super cute cropped 'do while out with her son.  Unfortunately, the rest of the internet world was not understanding of her new 'do.  While I do not have children I can certainly understand the need for something that takes less time and energy to maintain, it's hot out, and the cut is cute.  Plus, let's not forget that this is not the first time Solange has gotten scissor happy and it probably won't be the last.  Solange, I love it!  Go Girl!

Ways to Detangle Hair

One of my least favorite things to do to my hair is detangling. I mean seriously, why does hair have to even get tangled in the first place? Plus, it seems like the longer I stretch my relaxers the more tangling I have.

Anyway, there are a few different effective ways to detangle without losing massive amounts of hair in the process. The first and my favorite way is to detangle in the shower when my hair is saturated with conditioner. I start detangling with my fingers while my hair is covered in conditioner and then I use my Jilbere shower comb to detangle more as I rinse the conditioner out and to answer Sunday's AHS Asks question I always wash my hair in the shower. I feel as though washing my hair in the shower is the best because I do not have to 'flip' my hair over and wash it to wash in the sink and then 'flip' it back when I'm finished. When you wash in the shower, I think it aids in the detangling process instead of adding to the problem.

The other way to detangle that's pretty popular, especially among natural heads is finger detangling by section. This is done when the hair is dry, you use your fingers to part your hair and just detangle it section by section - the small the section the better. If I did this I would keep a spray bottle with a mix of glycerin and rose water to help moisten each section to aid in the process.

No Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner

I'm sure by now you have at least heard of the product line, No Frizz if you haven't tried their amazing frizz reducing products. A few days ago I put you up on how to get samples of the not even released yet products at Sephora, but I've had my own samples for about a week now and I'm loving them... the conditioner and leave-in especially.

Here's more info on the new products:
No Frizz Shampoo, No Frizz Conditioner and No Frizz Leave-In Conditioner, a complete hair care collection that brings the frizz-fighting power of PolyfluoroEster to the most advanced cleansing and conditioning formulas.

Each product has been developed to address the dryness and damage often associated with hair prone to frizz, removing the harsh sulfates, heavy oils and ineffective silicones and replacing them with modern, more effective ingredients. The formulas also utilize a new delivery system that really deposits No Frizz’s breakthrough ingredient, PolyfluoroEster, on the hair, allowing it to remain even after rinsing. In fact, after five uses, almost 1/3 as much PolyfluoroEster remains in the hair as with the No Frizz leave-in styling products, ensuring continued frizz-fighting power even before you style.
- No Frizz Shampoo was developed with PolyfluoroEster and SLMI, a gentle, sulfate-free surfactant that actually gives a luscious lather but removes any trace of dirt or oil without stripping the hair.

AHS Thoughts: The shampoo has a citrus-y scent that's pleasant and refreshing, but I'm not crazy about the shampoo. The lather is amazing, it's thick and creamy but afterwards my hair felt like it needed conditioner. I prefer to have shampoo's that leave my hair feeling soft, this wasn't the case.

- No Frizz Conditioner also contains PolyfluoroEster yet is completely devoid of the heavy oils, silicones and butters found in many frizz-fighting conditioners so it doesn't weigh hair down.

AHS Thoughts: LOVE! It made my hair soft and it really does help with frizz! What else could you ask for?

- No Frizz Leave-In Conditioner is an ideal option for drier hair, incorporating PolyfluoroEster with lightweight glycerin as the key moisturizing component instead of heavy oils, a first for a leave-in frizz-fighting product. No Frizz Leave-In conditioner is one of the only oil-free, silicone-free leave-in conditioners available on the market.

AHS Thoughts: LOVE!

The new No Frizz hair care collection will be available in Sephora and on Sephora.com beginning September 2009. $24 for each product in the Living Proof line.

Nourish & Shine

If there is one thing that truly tells the health of hair, it's the shine. You know that shine that you can tell came from within, that's what I'm on a constant mission to obtain. Healthy hair with incredible shine, until that day comes I'll fake it with Jane Carter Nourish & Shine. Don't get me wrong my hair has some shine to it, but the shine isn't blinding until I add Jane Carter Nourish & Shine. Okay okay, maybe it's not actually blinding, but you get the point.

Product Description: This 100% natural miracle product is the perfect hair care and body care emollient.

AHS Thoughts: With a product this good you would expect a deeper description from the company, but Jane prefers to keep it light and let the product do the talking and boy does this product talk a mile a minute. It's fantastic, the shine this product yields is amazing. The shine is what you can see but the Nourish part of Nourish & Shine is what you can feel. Shea butter, Kokum butter, Illippe butter, Mango butter, Vitamins A, D, & E, pear and grapefruit essential oils go the extra mile to make your hair soft and touchable. The only thing I could stand to do without is the Jane Carter scent, if you've sniffed one Jane Carter product you've smelled them all.

Availability: I've seen Jane Carter products at many different beauty supply stores around my way, but you can purchase on the Jane Carter website for $22.00 Don't trip over the price, it's a use it anywhere product, it's well worth the money.

Tip: Fine haired sisters, you might have to sit this one out. It is a tad bit on the heavier side, so you might want to try the Hair Nourishing Cream instead.

Color Protection with Pureology

We all know to protect our skin from the sun’s harsh rays, but what about our hair? The perfect solution to protect your hair during the hot summer months and beyond is Pureology Serious Colour Care. Colour treated hair requires protection from fading caused by free radicals in the atmosphere. These free radicals are unstable molecules formed when ultra violet light interacts with oxygen, water (moisture) and pollutants. Free radicals attack freshly colour-treated hair, causing hair to weaken, fade, and dull.

Pureology's solution to free radicals and colour fading is the exclusive AntiFadeComplex® included in all* Pureology products, protecting hair colour from start to finish. Pureology's AntiFadeComplex is a proprietary blend of potent antioxidants to counteract free radicals before they reach specific parts of the hair, helping to prevent distress and damage to already fragile colour-treated hair:

Heliogenol: Sunflower seed cake extract prevents colour loss from photo oxidation from UVA & UVB rays

Vitamin C & E: Powerful, natural antioxidants to counteract free radicals

Melanin: Herbal melanin retard oxidation and enhance colour hair radiance UVA & UVB Sunscreens: Shield hair from absorbing damaging ultra-violet light which oxidize and fade coloured hair

My grandmother is a huge fan of the Pureology Hydrate collection with AntiFade Complex, because her hair is dyed and she hates to have to re-dye it because the color faded. The AntiFade Complex in the line helps her keep her color looking fresh and vibrant and also keeps her hair soft and healthy. It's a win-win situation.

Post Beach Condition

When I went to Miami I did not expect the heat, salt water, and sand to complete take away any trace of moisture in my hair. So much so that the conditioner I brought along (Aussie Moist) was not helping at all. Thank goodness (and my boyfriend) for making sure there was a Sephora within walking distance from our hotel.

I knew exactly which two products I had to pick up. Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment. The large 5 oz. tub because it's a better deal and I know I'll use it all up. Plus, the Ojon Revitalizing Mist to help soften my hair post showers. The Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment did the trick and fast too. It's worth every penny of the $55 that it costs, trust and believe that. The only thing is the scent, which I can luckily say faded rather quickly. A few nights I decided to apply some to the ends of my hair before bunning and then smooth a bit over my edges to smooth away fly aways. It worked very well and my hair felt amazing the next day, only to be submerged again in the beautiful ocean. Hey... it was vacation. Next time, I know which conditioner to bring and which one to leave at home. Ojon definitely makes it into the travel bag from now on!

Baby Puffs

You know when a little girl's hair is growing, but not quite long to make it into one puff? I love this style so much for little girl's that I had to feature it here, with a quick how-to for mom's who are just all thumbs when it comes to their daughters hair.

This style is easiest accomplished after washing baby's hair. When it's still damp run some Miss Jessie's Baby Buttercreme through the hair to help define the curls and keep hair soft. The part the hair and secure an elastic around each portion. You might choose to use a soft baby brush to help smooth each section. Make two puffs on each side and then one in the back. Quick, easy, and so cute!
**Thanks Miss Paige for modeling!**

Instyler Curls

I'm sure you have seen my video review of the Instyler Rotating Hair Iron on my youtube channel. If not watch here, www.youtube.com/antihairslave. Anyway, I recently tried out the Instyler on my Gram's hair after I dyed it. Gram's hair is a little longer but a lot thicker than my hair. So I wanted to put the Instyler to the test and try it out on her hair.

Here is the before picture, where her hair has been blow dried and curled with a curling iron about a week prior.

This picture was taken after I dyed her hair, washed, conditioned, blowdried, and then styled with the Instyler. I did not use a curling iron or other type of flat iron, the only tool I used was the Instyler and it came out fantastic! She was really happy with the results and I must say the Instyler is easier to use on someone else than it is on yourself.

Airplane Hair

I'm off to Miami tomorrow! I'm really excited to finally be going on a vacation, even if it's just a few days. Anyway, I really don't like flying. Not because I'm scared of flying or anything like that, but I hate the dried out feeling I have once I land. Everything my skin, hands, hair, whole body just feels depleted. So this time I plan on using a hair and scalp oil, prior to leaving and leaving my hair in a high bun during travel. My oil of choice: Suki Hair & Scalp Conditioning OilSuki Pure Hair and Scalp Conditioning Oil. I will be using this oil because it's specifically made for both the hair and the scalp and the scent reminds me of the spa so if I catch whiffs while in flight I'm hoping it'll relax me.

Tip: Only use a small amount to ensure you don't leave oil marks where ever your head ends up. In my case, my boyfriends shoulder.

Advanced Grey Solution

Basically I've taken over in the hair care department for my Gram, it's cheaper and she says I do just as good of a job as the salon. It's a plus for me, because I get to try out new products on her hair. Most recently, I dyed her hair using Clairol Professional Advanced Solution in Dark Brown.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION - Beautiful Collection Advanced Gray Solution is an easy-to-use semi-permanent hair color developed specifically for relaxed or textured hair. Now you can you enjoy both convenience and moisturizing benefits, because you can relax and color the same day. Clairol Professional Advanced Gray Solution contains the new-to-the-world SynAIRgy™ technology that deposits rich, vibrant color to gently cover more gray-- up to twice as long as Beautiful Collection Moisturizing Color, but simpler and without any harsh, damaging effects. Plus, it comes in five great shades!

AHS thoughts: I absolutely love using this hair color. There is no mixing, no mess, and most importantly the texture of the dye is thin enough to move through the hair but thick enough to not be all runny and messy. Downside: you have to buy your own gloves. The dye covered my gram's grey way better than other products I have used in the past. This product is right up there with her favorite dye and that's Bigen.
Stay Tuned because tomorrow I will show you guys the finished results including what I used to style her hair!

Creme of Nature

Creme of Nature hair care products are on probably on just about everyone's list of the top 5 most popular black hair care products list, but have you tried any of their products lately? A while back, Creme of Nature or CON as it's lovingly referred to on the hair boards, under went a major makeover that had some die hard CON fans up in arms. The reason? The formula was changed. Can I make a major confession? I never tried the original CON products, can you believe it? For some reason, I just never felt compelled to buy the products. Who knows maybe it was the very plain and boring packaging. Now with the updated look, the products are more appealing visually.

Creme of Nature Red Clover & Aloe Soothing Shampoo product description: Red Clover & Aloe Soothing Shampoo uses organic Red Clover, one of nature’s healing emollients, plus Aloe to soothe and hydrate dry hair and flaky scalp while gently cleansing and detangling hair.

Creme of Nature Chamomile & Comfrey Conditioner description: Pamper your hair with Creme of Nature® Chamomile & Comfrey Healing conditioner. Organic chamomile soothes and detangles while healing comfrey moisturizes and protects.

AHS Thoughts: I had an opportunity to try out some of the new products and I can see why they have a major following. First up, let's chat about the Creme of Nature Red Clover & Aloe Soothing Shampoo. The scent is nothing to write home about, but it cleanses my scalp very well without drying out my hair. Instead, of feeling dry and tangled like some shampoos leave my hair, my hair felt soft and moist. Next, I followed up with the Chamomile & Comfrey Nourishing Conditioner. Again, the scent is just okay, not special but definietly not bad. The conditioner was okay, I was kind of expecting more conditioning and softening from this product and it just didn't deliver. Afterwards, my hair felt soft just not as soft as I expected. I had a little bit better results with the Creme of Nature Jojoba & Olive Oil Moisture-active deep conditioning treatment, but neither of the two performed like the Creme of Nature Professional Nourishing and Strengthening Treatment in the tub. That was a true treatment, my hair felt soft and strong after using it.
Editor's Note: Not sure why the images are blue, in real life they are orange and yellow.

Scalp Nourishing Serum

I'm so happy to report that Jane Carter Solution Scalp Nourishing Serum does not have the medicinal scent that I remember it having. Years ago, I had to be about 10 years old, a hairstylist gave a small tube of Jane Carter Solution oil for the scalp and oh my, did it stink. I hated when my mom would put it in my hair because the scent just lingered and lingered. But now, I guess there is a new formula or this is a different product than the one from back in the day because this actually smells pleasant.

Product Description: This is a maintenance product for anyone plagued with dry scalp. We suggest that you use it as a "leave in" scalp nourisher. Because Scalp Nourishing Serum is in a hybrid safflower oil base, you only need a small amount. Use it sparingly. The ylang ylang and cedar extracts reduce fungus and bacteria. The safflower oil sooths the scalp and restores it back to health. This product is 100% natural.

AHS Thoughts: Alright here is the thing, I've read some other reviews saying that it weights the hair down. Well, the product is clearly intended for use on the scalp, I'm not sure if people are applying the oil to their hair as well but don't it's too heavy for that. Use the handy dropper and use the oil sparingly. A little bit is all you need and it's very easy to massage it right into the scalp. So, used correctly, it's a great product for the scalp. Usually, my scalp is not dry and itchy, but even still I enjoyed this scalp serum. I feel like my scalp is often negliected since I've abandoned my scalp massages (for now) but this is a real scalp treat. I love the handy dropper so much I'm considering purchasing amber bottles with droppers to house my other hair oils.

Product tip: If you are heavy handed with products, save this for use as a pre-poo treatment.
