Hold + Shine in one product

I've been co-washing like crazy and so far so good. I even found a product that I like to hold my edges down, Elasta QP Glaze. I've been applying a small amount around my edges and then using a soft brush to distribute it, ensuring that I have no clumps of gel anywhere, and finally sliding on my homemade headband. Elasta QP Glaze adds some serious shine and it holds without making my hair dry or hard. What's even better, I have not noticed any small breakouts around my hairline like I did with SoftSheen Carson's Let's Jam. Elasta QP contains glycerine, a lightweight humectant used primarily in skin care products, to impart moisture, and panthenol (Vitamin B5) to create shine.

Bantu Knots Gone Wrong

The night before Dr. Miracle's big press party, I decided to try something different. I wanted to wear my hair in nice big loose waves, so I put my hair in bantu knots. I should have known better than to try something new the night before an event, but oh well. My bantu knot out did not come out like I wanted, my hair ended up looking like a big hot mess. This is about 40 minutes before I had to walk out the door to catch the bus to the city, initial I panicked, I even thought about not going, but then I came to my senses and grabbed some bobby pins and created some sort of down 'do.

The weather was kind of nasty anyway and good thing I opted for a style with less hair out, because I ended up spending a lot more time outside in the misty weather than I wanted to. My hair was did not turn out how I wanted it to, but I made the best of it. Sometimes big messy hair is the best base for a sloppy down 'do. Check out the end result and just so you know these photos were taken after I came back home.

Salon Review: Zoku Salon

About a week ago I had the pleasure of attending an exclusive Shu Uemura Art of Hair Event held at Zoku Salon.

The Rundown:
Zoku Salon
17 Union Place
Summit, NJ 07901
(908) 273-9658
http://www.zokusalon.com/

First Impressions:

Luckily, I was able to get a great parking space right outside the salon. I can tell by the area that a good parking spot is hard to come by so I considered myself extremely lucky. The down side? It was metered parking. The salon is a bit on the smaller side, but it does not at all feel cramped. Instead, the flow of the salon seems as if a feng shui decorator had some input here and there. The overall atmosphere was very relaxing. The goal of Zoku Salon is to bridge the gap between the east and west and it's done amazingly well. The creators of the salon, Zoe and Christine are known for their unparallel expertise in hair design and coloring services. Salon Zoku has just made getting your hair done in Jersey trendy.

The Services:
I received a brand new service exclusively for Shu Uemura, Shu Uemura Art of Hair Ceremony. I got the Complete Ceremony ($75 for 30 minutes) that combines the Purifying and Hair Care Ceremonies plus an extended scalp massage to create the ultimate Ceremony experience. The Ceremony begins with Obhibori (a warm towel) and a cup of Japanse green tea. First, the Clarifying Ceremony cleanses and deeply purifies the hair while moisturizing and revitalizing the scalp. Then the made to measure customized Haircare Ceremony combines a mositurizing Depsea Base and Absolu oil. The stylist used the Moisture Velvet Absolu Oil to nourish my hair with Camellia oil and essential lips and minerals to rebalance moisture levels. Did you know Camellia oil was originally used by geishas to smooth and soften the hair?

Johanna & Joi

Johanna was my stylist and she used the complete Shu Uemura hair care line on my hair. She blowdried my hair straight and then added a few curls to the ends with a curling iron. I was able to perserve my 'do for about a week, usign Shu Uemura Silk Oil to refresh it throughout the week (expect a complete review).

Perfect Time for Pre-Poo

Summer time is the perfect time to Pre-Poo without having to waste time, sitting in the house while you do it. It's nice and warm outside and the sun's rays are beaming, so oil up your hair and scalp and get outside! The warmth outside combined with the sunshine will help the oil penetrate into your hair making for the perfect pre-poo experience.

Are you a haircare newbie and have no idea what a pre-poo is?
Pre Poo or Pre Shampoo is a hair care treatment at you give yourself prior to shampooing your hair. Pre poo's are usually oils or some other type of deep conditioning mixture.

How do you pre poo?
Basically, all you have to do is apply your pre poo mixture to your hair and let it sit for a while. The length of time you leave it on is entirely up to you. Some people do it overnight, while other's do it for just a half an hour or so.

Anti Hair Slave's favorite Pre Poo of the Moment:

icon
icon Suki Pure Hair & Scalp Conditioning Oil because it's a 3-in-1 hydrating formula that works as a leave-in conditioner, hot oil or scalp repair treatment to provide shine, manageability, strength & deep moisture without residue, buildup or weight added. More product information: Active ingredients - Organic lavender & rosemary extracts. 100% organic pressed fruit oils treat dry scalp, dandruff or eczema issues while potent essential oils help stimulate hair growth & thickness for stronger, healthier hair & scalp. Ideal for all hair types especially dry, damaged, eczema & dandruff. This product is vegan.

Rock the Look: Michelle Obama at American Ballet Theatre’s Opening Night Gala

Michelle Obama was in attendance at The American Ballet Theatre’s Opening Night Gala, wearing a black dress by designer Azzedine Alaia. Soft & Beautiful spokesperson Roslyn Baker shares tips on how to recreate Michelle Obama’s elegant ‘do in a few short steps:

STEP 1. Apply the Soft & Beautiful StyleProtect Nighttime Dry Wrap Mousse (an AHS Favorite) to the crown area of hair as you begin to blow-dry.

STEP 2. Once dry, apply a small amount of Soft & Beautiful StyleProtect Sculpting Gel around the hairline and smooth with a bristle brush.

STEP 3. Section off the crown area. Spray the Soft & Beautiful StyleProtect Spritz on a small sub-section of hair. Using a large barrel curling iron, lift the hair up for maximum volume. Repeat this process until the crown area is completed. For the remaining back and side, use a flat iron or large barrel iron to smooth and turn the hair under. For maximum volume, lift the hair away and up from the scalp with the irons and gently smooth them down hair line.

STEP 5. The soft, side swept bangs are glamorous and sexy. Spray the bang area lightly with the Soft & Beautiful StyleProtect Spritz. Using the large barrel irons or flat iron curl hair over to the side. Use clips to hold the bangs in place and spritz once more. Use a large tooth comb to comb the hair into place. For added shine, spray the hair with Soft & Beautiful Oil Sheen Spray.

How to Co-Wash: A Refresher

YaY! Summer is right around the corner. It's warm and it's time to co-wash! I love cowashing my hair and I get tons of questions about how to co-wash hair. So let's do a quick refresher on how to cowash hair.

What exactly is cowashing?
Co-washing is when you wash your hair (mostly scalp) with conditioner instead of shampoo. Shampoo is drying and harsh on the hair and scalp because of the sulfates.

So what's wrong with a sulfate free shampoo?
Nothing at all! Sulfate shampoo's are great, but do you really need to shampoo up every day? Or even every other day? Cause, I know I don't so co-washing works out better for me. It allows me to get fresher feeling hair without drying it out. Plus the warm water helps natural oils from the scalp slide further down the hair shaft.

How do I cowash?
Co-washing is super easy to do. All you have to do is substitute out your shampoo for a super loose conditioner, the runny-er the better. I prefer to use VO5 moisture milk conditioner in strawberry because it's thin and smells great. Concentrate on the scalp and that's all!

Remember when I broke the news that Strength of Nature was the new owners of Elasta QP? If you missed the news, check the story here. Anyway, changes are in the air for Elasta QP. Products will be reformulated with "Organic Infusion" making their vitamin enriched with Olive Oil, from what I can tell the Elasta QP Glaze, Curl Wax, Design Gel, Design Foam, Design Silk, Shampoo, and Condition will all be reformulated with this new "Organic Infusion".

What's interesting... I do not see any mention of the Mango Butter and I KNOW that's a favorite among a lot of readers.

Unique Headbands

When I cowash and airdry my hair sometimes it's bigger than I expected. That's part of the beauty of having tex-laxed hair over bone straight relaxed hair, you can have body and a curl/wave pattern or you can easily straight out. When my hair ends up bigger than expected, I always use some type of headband. Headbands are perfect for keeping your hair out of your face, adding a bit of flare to any outfit. The only downside is that I HATE headbands. I can never find one that fits my head perfectly and doesn't hurt. So, instead of going through the hassle of searching for headbands that I like and can actually wear I make my own. I find really pretty scarves and then fold them down into whatever width I want and wear it like a headband. Problem Solved!

Clairol Pro Beautiful Collection Advanced Gray Solution

Whether you’re looking for a rich color boost or to blend away grays, you can now relax and color on the same day thanks to the gentle, moisturizing benefits of Clairol Professional Beautiful Collection. Gram is all excited over the Beautiful Collection's New Advanced Gray Solution because it is an easy-to-use semi-permanent hair color developed specifically for relaxed or textured hair. There is no mixing and no prep work involved just open the bottle and apply the color.
Clairol Professional Advanced Gray Solution contains the new-to-the-world SynAIRgy™ technology that deposits rich, vibrant color to gently cover more gray-- up to twice as long as Beautiful Collection Moisturizing Color, but simpler and without any harsh, damaging effects.

What is SynAIRgy Technology?

SynAIRgy™ technology combines the benefits from both semi and demi-permanent color to create a whole new kind of dye system – one that reacts with oxygen in the AIR (instead of a developer) to form a larger molecule able to penetrate more deeply into the hair shaft.
I have the brand new dye in my possession and plan on using it to finally cover up Gram's grey that were still shining through after the last dye job. So stay tuned for product reviews complete with before and after photos.

Product Review: Roots Of Nature

SoftSheen-Carson has released a new product line, Roots of Nature. All the Roots of Nature products feature a mix of Shea Butter and Green Tea. Whenever I get products, I always sniff them first and foremost before anything else. A product can be fantastic but if I don't like the scent, it's a deal breaker. To say the very least, the SoftSheen Carson Roots of Nature Strengthening Oil Moisturizer smells like old powder. Unfortunately, this scent has been popping up in all different products lately. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but I hate it. So I put the moisturizer up and I haven't even tried it and I won't. The Shea Butter Green Tea Reconstructing Deep Treatment, on the other hand, I tried. It has the same scent, but I figured it wouldn't last. The conditioner is pretty good actually, the consistancy is very thick. So much so, that after my shower was completely my finger marks were still visible in the jar. The conditioner made my hair feel really soft and helped it detangle easily, but the scent just isn't worth it. I probably will not restock once these products are gone, I highly suggest you sniff it before purchasing.

Anyone want to add their 2 cents?  Have you tried it or sniffed it?

Thirsty Hair?

Got hair that's drier than the Sahara? Quench your hair's thirst with Oyin Homemade Juice and Berries. Now that the weather is warming up, I'm all for spray in leave-in conditioners. Usually, when I wear my hair straight I stay away from spray-in conditioners because it takes away from the sleekness of my hair.

Oyin Homemade Juice and Berries is my new favorite spray leave-in conditioner.

Product Description: "Greg Juice" has been one of our most popular products since its introduction more than two years ago - "Juices and Berries" is the same oil-free mixture of vegetable moisturizers and herbal essences; the same beautiful amber pump spray bottle. The change? The fragrance... Juices and Berries is fragranced with the juiciest, fruitiest, brightest fruit scent we could find! Perfect for summer, or anytime you want to sweeten your day.

The therapeutic effects are the same as for Greg Juice - spring water, strongly infused with a variety of herbs known to help stimulate the scalp and encourage hair growth; vegetable ingredients for detangling, moisture and suppleness; vegetable glycerine for humectancy and shine; and an essential oil blend nutritious to the scalp.

This formula, like Greg Juice, is excellent for a daily pick-me-up on cornrows or twists. My sisters say it keeps their locs moisturized without weighing them down. And if I tried to detangle my hair without a bottle standing nearby, it would stand up and laugh at my comb. Many uses, this potion has. Cop an 8 oz bottle and find out for yourself. . .

AHS Product Review: My hair loves this leave in. My nose loves the scent. Seriously, do you need more? It's a great leave in that thoroughly quenches every single strand and leaves my hair feeling fresh and nourished. Plus once I take my bun down at the end of the day the scent that wafts from my hair is just delightful! Plus at $11.00 you can't beat it!

Advanced Cosmetic Hair Dye Review

Remember months ago I dyed my Gram's hair using Bigen dye? Well she hadn't dyed her hair since then and that was back in November. Check the before and after pics. Today, I re-dyed her hair using Advanced Cosmetic Permanent Hair Dye in Medium Golden Brown (5GD). The unique thing about this product line is that the hair dye has no harsh chemicals such as para-phenylenediamine (PPD), ammonia, or resorcinol to color the hair. Instead of using harsh chemicals highly purified plant based dyes - RBE-Colors - have small molecules, which helps them penetrate hair naturally and gently without having to force the hair shaft open. Advanced Cosmetic's use special extraction techniques to physically separate the colors from the plant matter and mix them with natural mineral salts to make their unique permanent hair color.

Product Description: Our permanent hair color products contain no bleach or peroxide so they don't 'lift' color – meaning you won't wind up a lighter shade than you already are. They are formulated with super-pure, natural plant dyes that gently deposit lush color to enhance your existing shade, cover grey, add highlights or deepen your color, depending on what your original color is and which hair color you use.

AHS Thoughts: This kit included everything you need to dye your hair, from the mixing bottle, to the stain guard for around your edges - everything is in the box. The gloves are not the best, so if you dye your own hair or do a friends I would suggest you invest in hospital quality gloves. These types of gloves fit snugger to your hands allowing you to move freely without feeling like the glove might slip off or rip. The amount of color coverage to the grey area of Gram's hair left much to be desired. She's pleased, but I'm not. I'm a little disappointed, I was hoping this would cover all the grey hairs but it only covered them slightly, ever so slightly. It made the rest of her hair a rich vibrant brown, but the grey hairs still shine through. After all that work, the kit suggests that you use heat on and off for 35 minutes to ensure that the color really takes. We did that with my bonnet style dryer for about 40 minutes on and off and it's still didn't come out like I wanted.
This is a picture of Gram's hair before we dyed it, just to show off the length. Her hair is very thick and it's growing very fast too, I might add.

Silky Sexy Hair

Are you familiar with the hair care brand Sexy Hair? If not check them out. I recently tried the Silky Sexy Hair line that was just relaunched with two new regimens for the Silky line--one for Thick/Coarse Hair and one for Fine/Normal Hair. I tried out the shampoo and conditioner for Thick/Coarse hair.

First up the Silky Shampoo, because this formula is especially for thick/coarse hair it tells me that the company is trying to expand and create products for ethnic hair. Applause for them! Sexy Hair claims that Silky Shampoo strengthens and smoothes while gently cleansing to leave thick/coarse hair soft and radiant. The shampoo lathers well and smells great. It cleansed my hair well, just borderline of too well. My hair didn't feel stripped but I think it may have if I lathered up a third time, but the Jojoba Seed and Avocado Oils in the shampoo kept me on the safe side. The scent is fruity and very nice, I would say some type of fruit salad while Sexy Hair calls it a Mango/Pear fragrance either way it's nice.

On to the Silky Conditioner. Silky Conditioner is thick and creamy and this is actually banana scented, but in a Bonne Bell Lip Balm kind of way. It has Silk, Rice Proteins, Soy, and Pro Vitamin B-5 to moisture and strengthen. My hair felt soft, but I was kind of disappointed that the scent didn't hang around longer. Maybe if the shampoo scent and the conditioner scent matched it would last longer? I think it's a little bit weird that the products within one regimen do not all have the same scent, the Control Creme (which I have yet to use) has a Cherry Vanilla scent.

*Note* Why the picture is red, I have no idea... the products are actually in purple bottles.

Olive Factor Shampoo

I know how many of you guys love Olive Oil so when I stumbled across a new range of nautral products called Olive Factor I knew I had to share it. Olive oil is commonly refered to as "the Mediterranean miracle" so it's only natural that a company would make products using Olive's in all the products. Since we only chat hair here, I'll go right into the Olive Factor hair products. Olive Factor claims that their products promote stronger, healthier-looking hair because it stimulates hair follicles, strengthens the hair shaft, and restores shine.

I would go for the Nourishing Shampoo for damaged or chemically-treated hair.

Product Description: Gently cleans dry, brittle and lacklustre hair damaged by regular chemical or color treatments. Contains sunflower rich in polyphenols, which condition hair, promoting long-laster color. Rosemary and olive leaf extracts provide volume and lustre. Plant-derived natural vitamin B5 strenghtens and conditions. Hair regains health, flexibility and shine.

Sounds pretty good right?

On Track with Ayurvedic Hair Care

During the winter months my shikakai and alma rinses were put on hold. I was not co-washing my hair often, if at all because it was just too cold. Now that it's warmer out, Ayurvedic practices are sneaking back into my hair care regimen. To start, I am pre-pooing with oils more often, usually I use straight coconut oil but lately I've been switching it up adding different oils into the mix (more on those another time.) Also, I have started my Shikakai Alma rinses again!

Some readers are probably, saying to themselves what is she talking about! I'll do a little review to get you up to speed.

Ayurvedic Hair Care comes from ingredients and practices that are staples in Ayurveda which is medicial practices that are native to India. Basically, Ayurveda is alternative medicine that is native to India.

Shikakai Powder a.k.a The Fruit for the Hair is actually a nut and the powder comes from de-shelled shikakai nuts.

Benefits:
* Promotes hair growth
* Strengthens hair roots
* Shikakai powder has a 2 year shelf like and most boxes will have the manufactor date stamped on it (it is NOT an expiration date in most cases)

Amla Powder a.k.a. Indian Gooseberry comes from a tree that is worshipped as Mother Nature

Benefits:
* Amla is a very conditioning herb
* Amla is also thought to penetrate the scalp to strengthen the root of your hair ... think super strong new growth

How I use Shikakai and Amla Powder in my hair:

The mixture that I use it 1 part Shikakai and 2 parts Amla. I use a regular tablespoon and add one spoon full of Shikakai powder to a cup and then 2 spoons of Amla powder to the cup, I then use hot water to mix the powders. Once I get it nice and mixed I add some very cold water to spped up the cooling process. Once the mixture is to a temperature that I can stand it's off to the shower. Once in the shower I allow the water to saturate my hair and then I step out of the water, staying in the shower, and pour the mixture over my hair. I pay careful attention not to get it in my eyes, I've done that and it sucks. Once I rinse my hair with the shikakai amla mixture I rinse it out with water again and then proceed to co-wash. Because shikakai powder has cleansing properties I do not need shampoo, when using this rinse you only need to shampoo every three to four weeks.

More Ayurvedic Updates coming soon.

Jane Carter Revisited

Remember last August, Mama AHS took the Jane Carter Solutions products I had, used them, and then ended up not really liking them? No, okay here's the that story. Well, I used the conditioner and loved it, and now I'm finally back to review more Jane Carter Solutions products.

Let's start at the beginning, shall we? Shampoo: Jane Carter Solution Moisture Nourishing Shampoo. Anti Hair Slave LOVES it! The shampoo lathers thoroughly, cleanses very well, and then had us confused. Had we just used a lathering conditioner? Double checked the label, no it says shampoo. Our hair was so soft and easily detangled we were ready to call a quits right there, but we pushed onward. Up next: Conditioner: Jane Carter Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner. Another hit! AHS has loved this for some time now. It's conditions, moisturizes, and has amazing detangling abilities on our relaxed hair. Now that the wash and condition session is over, up next is the styling phase. The only downside so far is the scent of the products, something about the scent just doesn't do it for me. But so far, I'm able to get over it because the products are so good.

KeraCare Humecto Conditioner

KeraCare Humecto Conditioner has a brand new creamier, thicker formula. The President of Avalon, the company behind KeraCare products, said that many fans of the 5 lb. tub said that the small sizes were not as creamy. This prompted the company to begin to try to make a creamier formula and this is it.

Product Description: KeraCare Humecto Creme Conditioner helps correct and prevent moisture loss due to exposure to chemicals and thermal styling appliances. • Penetrates deep within the hairshaft to hydrate and humectify hair. • Decreases interfiber friction between hair strands to prevent hair breakage. • Improves the surface porosity of hair resulting in a softer hair texture. • Enriched with a fragrance that relaxes and soothes the senses.

AHS Thoughts: The brand new KeraCare Humecto Creme Conditioner with the thicker formula is great. The scent is light but very nice. The slip is still very good, if not even better. I'm a big fan of thick creamy conditioners and this is a great one. Immediately, my hair felt softer and it was very easy to detangle. I will continue to use this product.
