Treat your Tresses to Caviar

I tried a new shampoo and conditoner, it's actually Kimora Lee Simmon's favorite shampoo and conditioner or so I've heard. It's Alterna Caviar Collection, I opted for Caviar Anti-Aging Moisture Shampoo with Seasilk and Caviar Anti-Aging Moisture Conditioner with Seasilk which are both formulated to moisturize hair. The results are great, because the shampoo contains no sulfates it did not strip my hair at all, in fact it was a very creamy shampoo that conditioned well. I love a conditioning shampoo that actually conditions, and this does exactly that. After washing and conditioning with this line my hair felt soft and healthy and it has earned a spot in my shower!
FYI: The bottle is purple, I'm not sure why the image is red.

Perfect Wedding Hair: How-to

I'm not sure if you saw Natalie Portman at this year's Oscar's ceremony, but her hair was so beautiful. I thought it would be perfect for a wedding and I had to get the how-to to share. Kevin Mancuso, Creative Director for Nexxus® Salon Hair Care, created the modern and romantic updo worn by presenter Natalie Portman. With a sweeping side part and soft curl, pinned into a beautiful knot at the nape of her neck, the look was deceptively easy to create. Kevin described how to get the look below in a few simple steps.

How-to Get the Look:

Step 1: Apply a volumizing styler to the roots, like Nexxus Root Exxtend, to add body into the hair.Distribute a medium-hold mousse, such as Nexxus Mousse Plus, throughout hair to and maintain and support the structure of the style. More modern updos employ product instead of teasing to build body, for a softer, healthier look. Blow dry hair with a large round brush, concentrating on the ends to smooth the hair.

Step 2: After drying, use a medium sized curling iron throughout the hair to create uneven waves and set the shape around the face. Once curled, create side part and pull hair back and away from the face. Then, take various sized sections of the curled hair and twist and pin back to create the updo. Insert an elegant, decorative pin above the updo to draw attention to the intricate details of the style.

Step 3: Finish look with a light-weight hairspray, like Nexxus Comb Thru, to help secure the style throughout the evening.

Tracy Reese - Runway - Fall 09 MBFW
TRESemmé Fashion & Beauty Consultant Erin Anderson created a very low key, yet hot hairstyle for Tracy Reese's Fashion Week Ready-to-wear collection showcased at NY Fashion Week.

2. Rough-dry hair with blow-dryer using hands, working roots with fingers to give hair natural volume.
3. Next, take a 3/4 inch curling iron, and curl random sections of hair to create waves. Then rake through with fingers. Spray hair with TRESemmé Smooth Frizz Shield Finishing Spray and shake out style to give it a “rough” look.

3. Twist one section of hair and spray with TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Spray Gel, then diffuse twist with blowdryer.
4. Curl twist into a loose bun and set with a hairpin. Continue for all sections, creating four buns. (Two above the ears and two behind the ears)
5. Remove pins allowing all buns to fall, then shake out with fingers, and finish with TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Finishing Spray.

Academy Awards Hair: Queen Latifah

81st Annual Academy Awards - Show

Hairstylist Julie Baker created an Elegant Modern Chignon with, my famous Side-Part for Queen Latifah to wear at the 81st Academy Awards Ceremony.

States Baker, “Latifah’s dress is very elegant, modern and chic, and her hair needs to complement this, so we decided on a modern chignon which features very smooth hair, a side part, bangs that swoop down in front, a low bun in the back that is off to the side.”

To achieve this glamorous modern look, Baker dried Latifah’s hair using the new FHI Heat Nano Salon Pro 2100 blow dryer, then applied FHI Heat Hot Sauce, a heat-activated conditioner that protects hair, to slightly damp hair. Last, she used her favorite FHI Heat Runway styling iron to smooth out Latifah’s tresses, before styling it into a chignon.

Academy Awards Hair: TARAJI HENSON

New York-based celebrity hair stylist, Dante Blandshaw, created the stunning red carpet look for Academy Award® nominee, Taraji Henson (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”). “This is a clean, fresh, modern take on a layered, textured bob,” said Blandshaw. “I wanted to create a modern, asymmetrical, textured bob with natural movement and shine.” Blandshaw shares expert tips on how he used Aveda products to achieve the SLEEK, TEXTURED BOB WITH SIDESWEPT BANGS:

“I started with Aveda Brilliant Shampoo and Aveda Brilliant Conditioner to soften Taraji’s textured hair,” said Blandshaw. “I love the Aveda Brilliant line because it provides a smooth shine to textured hair and reduces blow dry time.”

* Prep hair with Aveda Brilliant Damage Control to protect from heat styling.
* Blow dry hair straight using a paddle brush.
* After blow drying, add a dime-sized amount of Aveda Brilliant Universal Styling Creme to add additional shine without weighing hair down.
* Flat-iron hair to create the foundation for a smooth, sleek red carpet look.
* Using 1.5” and 2” barrel curling irons, curl hair throughout to give bend and movement, accenting the layers in the cut.
* Slightly curl the front to create a soft, side-swept bang for added height and fullness.
* Comb hair through with a wide-tooth comb.
* Spray with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray for a light finish. “Aveda Air Control Hair Spray is a perfect complement to this look because its lightweight formula provides lasting hold and shine without weighing hair down,” said Blandshaw.

Academy Awards Hair: Beyonce Knowles

Beyonce opted for a simple ponytail. What do you think about her look?

I love how in every picture she is perfectly positioned like a Barbie doll!

Academy Awards Hair: FRIEDA PINTO

Celebrity stylist, Jeffrey Paul, created a fresh and elegant red carpet hair look for Frieda Pinto. Radiant in John Galliano, Pinto’s hair is divided into three parts and twisted back into an architectural, couture flower shape on the right side of the head. “This look has a beautiful architecture; hair is twisted back into a youthful, feminine flower shape that complements Frieda’s face shape and stunning Galliano gown.”

Here’s how to get Pinto’s look:
* Start with Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Shampoo and Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Clay Conditioner.
* Mix a cocktail of Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam and Aveda Light Elements Defining Whip. Work the product into wet hair to add texture and volume. “When creating an updo, it’s important to use products that give thickness and body,” said Paul. “Pinto’s hair already has a lot of shine. The cocktail of Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam and Aveda Light Elements Defining Whip provided just the right amount of hold, body and texture without weighing hair down.”
* Blow dry hair back to add lift and height at the roots.
* Create a left side part and divide hair into three sections: three quarters of hair in one section on the right and the remaining hair into two smaller sections.
* Pull the right section of hair back into a low ponytail just behind the right ear above the nape of the neck.
* Twist the ponytail, working Aveda Light Elements Defining Whip into hair. Wrap the ponytail around the base, creating a flower shape. Secure in place with pins.
* Work Aveda Light Elements Defining Whip into each of the remaining sections and twist back and around the flower shape, creating a layered, rose-like effect. “The three twists flow together for beautiful movement,” said Paul.
* Finish the look with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray.
* Lastly, shake the head a bit to loosen up the look and provide a sense of natural movement.

PhytoSpecific Quinoa Oil Moisturizing Styling Balm

I splurged a bit on a hair product this week. I went to Sephora to look around and see what's new and ended up purchasing a PhytoSpecific product, PhytoSpecific Quinoa Oil Moisturizing Styling Balm to be exact. The entire PhytoSpecific collection is specifically created for naturally curly, frizzy and relaxed hair, plus when I tested a bit of the product I knew I had to have it. I don't even care that it has mineral oil listed as one of the ingredients. I don't necessarily love that, but I'm over being obsessed about it and I can't seem to escape it entirely anyway. Okay so back to the balm, can I be really corny for a second? This balm is the bomb! I couldn't help myself, I really like the way it makes my hair feel, plus the added shine is great. My hair feels soft and moisturized, yet light and flowy when I use it. I can't wait to try more Phyto products, my next relaxer will by with a phyto relaxer (especially since the relaxer is available in Sephora stores.)

NY Fashion Week Hair: Christian Siriano Fall 2009

Get the hairstyle from Christian Siriano's Fall 2009 runway show!

“Christian wanted a strong, geometric look that makes a statement, so we worked together to create a sculpted, modern chignon with high shine. Inspired by the Fall/Winter 2009 collection, this look has an Egyptian feel; it’s bold, yet elegant.” -- Jon Reyman (Lead Hairstylist for Aveda)

Jon explains, “This look can easily be adapted to have a looser, softer feel that’s very chic and modern. Start by blow drying hair straight with Aveda Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener. Create a strong middle part and pull hair back into a mid-height ponytail. Loop the ponytail into a looser chignon and secure in place with hair pins.”

Basically, hair has a strong center part and is pulled back cleanly into a boxy chignon for a bold, geometric look with overall shine. In several instances the look is accented with a gold, chain-style fringe emulating Cleopatra's bang.
Here is the step by step rundown for how to create the look:

Step 1: Prep hair with Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam for light, flexible hold and blow dry straight.
Step 2: Emulsify Aveda Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener in palms and smooth through hair to minimize flyaways and add shine and light hold.
Step 3: Separate hair into two halves, front and back. Begin by blow drying the bottom half straight, working in more Aveda Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener to flatten hair and add shine.
Step 4: Pull bottom half of hair tightly back into a ponytail at mid height, securing with an elastic. Step 5: Draw a strong middle part with the remaining top half of hair. Pull hair back along the sides into the existing ponytail and secure with an additional elastic.
Step 6: Work Aveda Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener into the ponytail to minimize flyaways and create a smooth, shiny surface.
Step 7: Fold up the beginning of the ponytail and secure against the head approximately a half-inch above the base with a two-sided elastic. The base of the ponytail is now hidden.
Step 8: Wrap a clear elastic around the bottom of the ponytail. For very long hair, add a second elastic midway on the ponytail to hold it together. Spray with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray for hold and shine.
Step 9: Fold the bottom of the ponytail under into a rectangular-shaped loop and secure in place approximately two inches below the center of the ponytail.
Step 10: Finish the look with Aveda Brilliant Medium Hold Hair Spray for added shine, hold and definition.
Step 11: (select models only) Add a royal, chain-style fringe along the top of the hair line for a Cleopatra effect.

Review: Sizta 2 Sizta - Amazing Hair Oil

Another part of the In the Company of Sistas Sista Sampler for February was from Sizta 2 Sizta, a healthy hair care company. I received their Amazing Hair Oil to try and review.

Product Info: "A special blend of oils, it will leave your hair soft, shiny and full of body. This combination of Olive oil, almond oil, soybean oil, castor oil and lanolin will have your hair begging for more! This oil will not leave your hair oily or weighed down, it actually has no greasy afterfeel. It's awesome for blow drying, curling, roller setting, air drying, you name it this oil will "Amaze" you! Hair Oil is a special blend of Almond Oil, Soybean Oil, Olive Oil, Castor Oil and Lanolin."

AHS Thoughts: The packaging was cute, with the lavendar tie around the bottle and I especially liked that the bottle was sealed for freshness. The seal also protects your product from spilling all over the box when you order it. I must admit that I was like 'great another oil' when I opened the box, but once I sniffed it... wow! The scent is not that of an oil, it smells fragrant instead of oily. The oil left a great shine on my hair and did not weigh it down one bit. The key is to just use a little bit. This oil is great as a sealant and that's exactly what I plan on continuing using it for. It costs $6.99 for 4oz. so that's $1.75 an ounce... very affordable.

Lil Kim's Bad Bangs

OMG... WTF?!? Lil' Kim, what happened? Maybe her stylist cut her bangs while wet? Anyway, I hate these bangs... how about you?

Keisha gets Bangs!

Keisha Knight Pulliam at the NY Premiere for Madea Goes to Jail, she's looks FAB! and I'm loving her hair... what do you think?

Ursula Stephen on BANGS!

If you don't know who Ursula Stephen is then apparently you have been living under a rock for some time now. I'm sure you have seen Rihanna stepping out over and over again rockin' a seriously fierce 'do.... well Ursula Stephen is the woman behind the hair. Ursula is also responsible for the striking looks of many of Hollywood's It-Girls including Jordan Sparks, Michelle Williams and Christina Milian. Luckily, I was able to get some great advice from Ursula regarding bangs.

"Heavy, blunt bangs look amazing on people who have larger foreheads and a
square shaped face, but if you have a smaller, oval shaped face thick bangs can
look overwhelming. Instead, opt for a bit of fringe or wisps of a bang to
compliment your face."

When asking your stylist for bangs, remember that "Bangs are the hardest to cut on someones hair, and you should always cut them longer that how you originally want them. The best way to cut bangs is dry, because they appear longer when they are wet." So if your stylist is about to cut your wet hair, please speak up for yourself and tell her that you would prefer she/he cut your bangs while your hair dry. Personally, I would always ask for something a bit longer than what I was looking for just in case. It's better to have to snip a bit more than wait a few months to cut them to the length you desire.

NY Fashion Week Hair: Mackage Fall 2009

Warren Tricomi worked with designer Mackage where Edward Tricomi created the hair for the Mackage Fall 2009 Show at New York Fashion Week Fall 2009.

Step #1: Prep hair by making it straight and sleek and brush back.

Step #2: Take the ponytail to a new level, a high pony on the top crown of the head and secure with a band.

Step #3: Once the ponytail is secure wrap a leather binding around and upwards about 3" and spray lightly with hairspray and smooth out hair.

Step #4: Apply black netting across the face and towards the back of the hair tightly.

This Fall spice up the classic ponytail by going to your local fabric store and adding an accent to your ponytail by wrapping a piece of leather, velvet or lace fabric and make your ponytail the ultimate accessory.

Body So Fine Moroccan Hair Mask: Review

I am a member of Top Sista Sites and the recently sent me Body So Fine Moroccan Hair Mask to try and review. Editors Note: This product is available In the Company of Sistas Sista Sampler for February, check it out here.

Body so Fine says that the Moroccan Hair Mask is great for "trouble hair" and I couldn't agree more. This product left my hair feeling clean and soft. The only thing I did not like was that the product is a bit runny, so things might get messy. FYI: wear a plastic cap while you let this marinate on your hair for about a half an hour or under a hooded dryer for 15 minutes. Otherwise, it's a great hair mask that I will be incorporating into my hair care regimen on a regular basis. Hair Masks are like a deep treatment so I plan on using this one every 3 weeks or so. Plus, the scent is heavenly like a cross between vanilla and something else really sweet.

Review: Marula Natural Therapy by Motions

I know you all know how much I love incorporating oils into my hair care regimen. I'm also sure you have passed Motions Marula Natural Therapy collection in your local drugstore or supermarket, but next time you may want to pay more attention. The entire line of Marula Natural Therapy contains the exotic marula oil which is found in Africa plus a blend of antioxidants, minerals, and amino acids to provide 4 times more strength and 90% less breakage in just one use! Plus, in March a strengthening shampoo, strengthing conditioner, and a thermal oil will be added to the collection.

I recently had the opportunity to test out the Marula Natural Therapy Strengthening Shampoo and Marula Natural Therapy Strengthening Conditioner and I'm in LOVE. I am thoroughly surprised at the quality of these two products. The shampoo has a citrus scent, something like a grapefruit and left my hair feeling clean, soft, and strong. Emphasis on soft and strong, because that's what was most surprising. My hair did not feel at all stripped, dry, or squeaky clean. Instead it was fresh and soft, I so HEART this shampoo. The thickness of the conditioner surprised me, I was thinking it would be much thinner than it actually was. It was very conditioning and also left my hair soft. Both of these products get a big A+ from me, especially considering their widespread availability (come March) and low price tag. I have yet to try the Strengthening Thermal Oil, but I have it on hand and once I try it I'll do another review.

NY Fashion Week Hair: 3.1 Phillip Lim Fall 2009

Looks like Keri Hilson started a bit of a trend, the bowl cut. Models at the 3.1 Phillip Lim Fall 2009 Ready-to-Wear show took it back to the originally looking bowl cuts. This is a look I'm not exactly crazy about. How about you?

NY Fashion Week Hair: Baby Phat Fall 2009

Models for Baby Phat's Fall 2009 Ready-to-Wear collection sported hair that was inspired by none other than the First Lady, Michelle Obama. The look featured a shoulder length 'do with loads of volume and even more loose curl and body. Odile Gilbert is the hairstylist behind this look, which is easily created by setting your wet hair on rollers to dry, then teasing it up and creating body and volume. Since hairspray is completely necessary to re-create this look I would suggest Bumble & Bumble's Classic Hairspray because it adds serious hold without being super hard and stiff, plus it's 100% brushable (without the breakage). If you're a regular reader here you know how much I hate hairspray, basically this is the only hairspray that touches my hair.

I know we never talk fashion here, but how freakin' fierce is this brown leather jacket!?!? I want one!
